DLL file missing
hi,
I am loading a game for a friends child, OS is win98se. After loading/installing, we click on the exe and get this message; "snowballrun.exe file is linked to missing export DDRAW.DLLirectDrawCreateEx". I thought it may have been due to the original instal of o/s as it was done using only .cab files, thought that perhaps there were some files that needed digging out manually, but there is nothing on the c/d that relates to this file. Any ideas ? ...Rex.. |

I think the best way to explain this error message is to list an example and
then walk you through the troubleshooting logic I'd use.**Example**: The LOADWC.EXE file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:wnsprintfA File one is expecting file number two to be able to do something which it cannot do. This generally means the second file was replaced with an older version which doesn't contain the functionality that first file was expecting to find. There's a possibility file number two is corrupt or missing but most likely an older version file is the cause. In either case, replace *your* file two with a current (or more current) version. For help finding a replacement file, go here and do a search: http://support.microsoft.com/service...on/dllinfo.asp Do a search on *your* file two and be sure to include the file extension (.dll). Once the results appear, locate the version of file two that your PC is using and work up the list. When you click on the more information link, you will find what product(s) that version of the .dll is contained in. This may give you a clue as to what version of the file should be there. For example, you have version 5.0.2614.3500 of the shlwapi.dll on file and by checking the list of files, you find this version comes with W98SE. Going up the list, you find version 5.50.4134.600 is contained in IE 5.50. If you had updated your browser to IE5.5, there's the problem--the correct version of shlwapi.dll got overwritten by the copy with comes with W98SE. Finally, the troubleshooting information above centers on file two since it should most likely be the source of the problem; however, file one could be an incorrect version or it might be corrupt. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Rex" wrote in message ... hi, I am loading a game for a friends child, OS is win98se. The fault more probably lies in SNOWBALLRUN which (if poorly programmed) may have overwritten one of the MS DDRAW files with a wrong version. The simplest solution may be / start / run / SFC.EXE = System File Checker set to review c:\windows\system\DDRAW*.* There should be three DLL files and one VXD. In a standard setup SFC can prompt you to restore these from your Win98 installation disk. If you want to try this method first copy c:\windows\system\DDRAW*.* to another folder on the hard drive. Then if you overwrite these files and later regret it you can recopy the file versions you had earlier. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Makes no sense whatsoever, Don. Why would a game installation install DLLs
with which it's incompatible? More likely, if the game did overwrite DLLs, it would affect *other* programs, not itself. No, the most likely problem is that the game requires a more modern version of DirectX than that which is installed, or some *other* program overwrote related files with earlier versions. -- Gary S. DLL file missing
Hi, plz excuse late get-back. All replies have been greatly appreciated.
I finally got around to checking the DirectX version and it is 6.1, perhaps this is the place to start. I have xp on my computer, can I copy the DirectX from that and place it on the other one? Or is it an Instal issue requiring a '.exe' and registry adjustment only done via an Instal? If not, what is the best way to grab a better version, I have heard some hardship tales regarding updating Dx. ...Rex.. "Ingeborg" wrote in message ... Check the game's requirements to decide which one you need. You can download it at www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=directx, or when you want the latest, at www.microsoft.com/downloads. There a big jump in size between V7 and V8, so when you don't need V8+, you'd better get V7. |
