Installation problems

I had to reload windows 98 onto my pc. After installation certain programs
wouldn't work. When I tried to reinstall Adobe PhotoDeluxe I get the
following error.

shell32.dll is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.dll : SHRegGetUSValueA

Can anyone help.

I suppose Shlwapi.dll is damaged. The function SHRegGetUSValue is exported
since version 4.71, which came with IE4, so it should be in a clean W98
installation.
Try to use SFC to extract a fresh one.

What about..?.. SHRegGetUSValueA.

That is saying (unless Ingeborg is right) that your SHLWAPI.dll is
out-of-date. It doesn't have SHRegGetUSValueA, which shell32.dll is
looking for. Have you gone to Windows Update to take the cumulative IE
critical update?

This is what mine look like in Win98SE, IE6 SP1, fully updated...

That's the same. Most windows Api functions which have to deal with strings
come in duplo. One with an 'A' on the end for Ansi, one with an 'W' on the
end for Widechar or Unicode. So there are two versions of SHRegGetUSValue,
SHRegGetUSValueA and SHRegGetUSValueW, but you will find only documentation
about SHRegGetUSValue. Side effect: Without knowing SHRegGetUSValueA you
can tell its deals with strings.

I see. That has a logical sound to it. Anyway...

START, Find, F/F
Named: SHLWAPI.dll
Containing: SHRegGetUSValueA
SHRegGetUSValueW

BOTH indeed find the file. BUT putting "SHRegGetUSValueQ" in "Containing
text" finds no SHLWAPI.dll. So, that would be a true test of it. But,
yea, what you say does seem logical enough.

I suppose the error message would be different altogether if SHLWAPI.dll
were not in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM at all.
