Default What's this: "While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error."?

I just built my first computer, and it works fine: When I
turn it on, fans spin and lights come on, along with the
complementary beeping noise. Everything there is installed
right, I'm sure. But after installing Windows98 fully,
instead of going to my desktop when turning the computer
on, instead I'm greeted with the following message:

"While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error.
You need to restart your computer."

I can start the computer in safe mode, and I've searched
through the help files at least three times. I've tried
literally everything, even installing Windows98 again...
And it goes without saying that I restarted the computer
as instructed by the message, but it still popped up. What
do I do? Please help me!!!

Be warned of anomalies in this regard.

1. The NDIS problem may prevent installation of
Win98 on fast CPUs: but Win98 must be installed
before the MS NDIS hotfix can run. (It requires Windows.)

2. MS provides the hotfix directly by email after a voice
request to one of the free telephone lines. But you may
(like me) receive a hotfix that does not run: "This program
was not designed for your version of Windows."

MS would prefer everyone to adopt XP and junk Win98.

Don,

Of course MS would prefer for people to upgrade--that's how they make money;
however, I don't think you are giving the company due credit:

They extended W98 support for 2 years based on user feedback. They are
providing replacement CDs for W98 retail full and upgrade versions that have
been damaged. They are providing replacement product keys for **OEM** and
retail versions of W98. Hot fixes such as the NDIS one remain available.

MS could not have anticipated this timing problem with greater than 2.1 GHz
processors in 1995 when they began work on W98. The hot processor at the
time was a Pent 133 MHz.
