Default MPREXE.EXE error during startup

G'Day All,

I am an Xp user with little knowledge of ME.

I am trying to help a neighbour.

She has experienced a number of slightly different errors with MPREXE.EXE
and KERNEL32.DLL.

These errors occurred during start-up.

Most said "MPREXE.EXE has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL", and
a few have said "...has caused an invalid page fault in ...".

When I first became involved the system would start in neither Normal nor
Safe Mode.

I have renamed, and replaced from the CD, the following:
USER32.DLL
GDI32.DLL
WINMM.DLL
KERNEL32.DLL and
MPREXE.EXE

The file CMAPIENG.VXD does not appear to be on the system.

The system now starts fine in Safe Mode, but the error still occurs during
start-up, a few seconds after the login dialog appears

Currently when the error appears, she can move the dialog to the side of the
screen,
enter her password and continue.

This strategy has enabled her to back up her documents, photos etc, although
she can NOT access the Internet.

I would appreciate any advice on how to fix it once and for all.
