Hi my question is that every time I restart or start my
computer it requires my windows 98 CD to use as boot
record to start windows without the cd in the drive my
windows 98 doesnt startup it just stops at the logo
screen. how do i change my boot record from my cdrom to my
actual harddrive where the software is actually installed
and how do i find out what my harddrive is called.

The boot record is located on the hard drive. Don't believe this has
anything to do with your problem.

Setting a PC to boot from CD occurs in the bios. After doing so, the PC
will attempt to access boot files from the CD, not the hard drive.

If the PC hangs after attempting to boot from CD, apparently, the bios setup
is not configured properly to boot from the next possible bootable device.
Or there is a problem with the hard drive or its interface.

The hard drive may have a model number and serial number accessed through
the hard drive firmware. The PC does not use this information during normal
operation. The volume name and a name provided during a format is in the
partition boot record.
