Default Setting up 98SE and XP on same pc

--
Ole School from Frisco

I have installed 98SE on 13 GB C drive. I would like to also install XP on
my 80GB D drive. How do I do it so that I have the option of using either
system when I turn on my computer? I have been told other people have more
than one OS on their pc.

Answer 1. Windows XP setup will automatically install a boot manager.
Problem is, the XP system can see the 98 system, and that isn't usually
desirable. Windows XP puts files all over the place that occasionally cause
98 to have fits.

Answer 2. You would be wise to keep those two operating systems from seeing
each other, and the boot manager (what you're looking for is called a boot
manager), the one that comes with XP, won't let you hide them from each
other. For this reason, I use BootIt NG. I wouldn't say that it's too
complicated, but it does take some time and care to make sure you do it
right. If you choose this method, we can help you through setting it up
properly, give you a list of steps.

You should ask this question in an XP newsgroup. Windows 98 does not have
any facility for selecting the operating system to run at startup time, but
XP does. I believe that the process simply involves answering a prompt at
the time of installing XP, when you are asked about whether or not you want
to retain the existing operating system, and where you want to install the
new operating system. There's some information he

Note that there is another option that may be more suitable. You can
install XP as your only operating system and then run Windows 98 in a
virtual machine. It will probably run a bit slower than if you booted
direct to W98, but you will not need to reboot if you want to switch from
one to the other - you simply boot XP all the time, then run W98 when you
need it, and switch between the two like you switch between any other
application. See, for instance:

I forgot to mention that the XP is an XP Home Edition Upgrade. Does this make
a differance as to how I should set up my pc? I already have the 98SE on disk
drive C. I thought I could simply put the XP on drive D. How do I proceed?
Thank you in advance.

This is why you should ask your question in an XP group. These are all
questions they know the answers to. We deal with Win98 here.

Please read carefully through the description in the Knowledgebase article I
referred you to, and then if there are any additional questions such as
whether the version of XP that you are using makes a difference there are
people in the XP newsgroups who have the appropriate experience. I have
never used XP Home, but I understand it is restricted in a number of areas.
