Default WINME NETWORKING PROBLEMS

Hi,
A friend gave me her old (Compaq Presario 1200) laptop to see if I could
straighten out her networking, which now isn't working at all.

She originally was running AOL as her online source through dialup
networking ( ! ), but gave it to an acquaintance to see if he could get
highspeed capability, and he has returned the laptop with a 3Com PC Card and
a dongle to connect it with an ethernet cable. I've tried my cable modem with
the card after trying to install a driver for it, but get an error message re
no DHCP; this after trying START--Run--winipcfg--select 3Com card. When I
try to "release all," I'm notified that release is already in progress, and
when I try to "renew all," I get the message about the DHCP.

Another change she noticed when her sys was originally returned by the
acquaintance was a choice she was forced to make on boot for either F1 (Boot)
or F10 (Computer Setup). Before, it booted right to the desktop.

Can anyone help? THANKS in advance
