There is NO such thing as a good registry cleaner!!!!
The only good tool is knowledge.

And for that particular task: a lot of patience.

there are a large number of those applications fake
registry/spyware/av/security programs
I call them ScareWare
they perform a 'free' scan and use supposed results to try to scare you into
paying money for something that 1.doesnt work 2.doesnt work and 3.doesnt
work.
the problems that they find, often only exist in the program doing the scan,
so the maker can claim after you pay the money that they are gone
If there were any real problems in the registry, not simple orphaned keys
but an actual problem, you would know.
There would be BSODs all the time, or the pc would not boot, or file
associations would fail.
If you arent having such problems there isnt a fault in the registry.
If any automated registry cleaner makes a mistake, (and they all do
eventually by removing the wrong key) you get BSODs, the pc will not boot,
file associations fail,
Hmmmmmmmmm
sounds like the cure is the worse as the disease, NOT a good idea.
better is
boot to dos

scanreg /opt
scanreg /fix
scanreg /opt /fix
scanreg /fix /opt

or any other chosen combination of fix and opt swiches for dos scanreg

to remove many of the orphans
& recreate the registry

I think the advise of the MVP's is to be heeded, however, I have, on
occassion, during the last 4 years, used a little free product called
RegSeeker to look for specific things in the resistry, like the names
of programs I've uninstalled but pieces were left behind by the sloppy
uninstall, and other things I did not want living in the registry
forever. It has worked fine, but you do have to look at every thing it
finds to make sure it is something you really want gone, even though
RegSeeker does create a back-up entry, I believe the product is
nothing more than a mask to create a more user-friendly version of the
Registry commands that are mentioned elsewhere.

I'm no MVP, I just programmed the big mothers for 35 years. PC's are
so much more fun.

Hi MBI and all,

After playing around with various "Reg Cleaners", I tend to agree with the
MVP's. On a completely clean install of XP, one particular cleaner
suggested numerous problems with my Registry. The only one I've found that
half-way (or better) works is JV-16 Powertools--but you better be darn
careful before you use it.
