Wireless Email problems
I have a PIII 500 Mhz PC Windows ME that is being used by the kids. I have
set up a Belkin wireless G USB adapter to it so the kids can share my broadband & printer etc. Apart from the internet freezing now and again - which I put down to the PC being old - the kids are happy. The problem is that we cannot connect to their Email account (OE) with the adapter attached. Everytime we try we get the same error message - Failed to connect to server pop.ntlworld.com. We can only send/receive if I connect a Cat5 cable to the PC and to the router on the other. Take it out and nothing. All the settings/passwords etc are correct - but it appears it will not connect wireless only wired. I'm stumped - why does the internet work but not Email ? I've tried Mozilla Thunderbird as an alternative to OE but still get the same errors. A friend thought it might be the pop & smtp ports but that means nothing to me. Anyone any suggestions what I can do ? Andy (London - UK) |

Make sure that OE is set to use any available connection -

Wireless Email problems
Thanks Noel,
I've checked my connections option on my account - It doesn't have the option to set to use any available connection. It only has one tick box - always connect using ... and the only option on the drop down list is LAN. Something I'm missing ? I can get internet but can't connect to my Email server Andy J |

UNcheck the 'always connect using....' box
that should cure the problem -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Andy J" wrote in message ... Wireless Email problems
Ok I've done that and restarted the PC but still it says "The host pop.ntlworld.com could not be found ... I've tested it again with the Cat5 cable and hey presto it finds the Email server and can send and receive no problem. Take out the cable and let the wireless adapter do its job and its back to the same error message, but I can still get the internet. I have a laptop with another Belkin adapter which works fine and it has exactly the same Email settings as the Windows ME PC. I can also share all files between all the PC's on my network - it's just I cannot get Email to work. Sort that one if you can !! Andy J |

Wireless Email problems
Are you running an email-scanning AV? - in which case it may be that the
proxy settings for that have gotten screwed (what's the AV? - not Norton, I trust!) Turn off email scanning on your AV, and see if that helps. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Andy J" wrote in message ... I run AVG free on this PC.
I have disabled the Email scanning option as requested. When I connect to OE it hangs at connecting then shows the same error message as before. Put in the cable and its happy. I can't have a wired network - its just not practical. I guess the kids will have to do without Email. Andy J |

Andy
Uninstall AVG on the affected machine - then reinstall it again, using the Custom option When the options come up, disallow the install of the Email scanner. This does NOT affect the security of the machine - merely the point at which the security is effective. then try again -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Andy J" wrote in message ... Wireless Email problems
I appreciate the time you are putting into my problem but I'm afraid its still the same story even after following your last recommendation. Interestingly - If I connect the Cat5 cable the Email works no probs. If I leave OE open and then remove the cable it still continues to work fine and I can send/receive messages. If I then close OE and then open it again (leaving the cable unattached) it goes back to the original error message. Is there maybe some advanced setting for my network card that says Email has to come thru' it ? My card is a Linksys LNE 10/100 ... or am I grasping at straws ?! Getting more and more confused, Andy J |

Wireless Email problems
Andy, your last report is ringing bells in the back of my mind and I may be
off-beam but check that Control Panel | Network - Network/Configuration - Primary Network Logon is set to 'Windows Logon'. Sorry if it is a bum steer. Good luck Mart "Andy J" wrote in message ...
