Whenever I run Scandisk (I need to because I cannot Defrag as I am told
there are errors on the disc and Scandisk is recommended) after about two
minutes I get a box telling me that Scandisk has restarted ten times because
Windows or another program is writing to this drive. I have no other programs
whatsoever running at the time!
Has anyone any idea what is happening. Help would be much appreciated.

Paul,

Boot to Safe Mode and run Scandisk from there. Alternatively and possibly
better boot to DOS using a Win Me boot floppy and run Scandisk from the
DOS prompt. Safe Mode will reduce the number of processes such as your AV
and firewall writing to the hard disk during the scandisk and running
Scandisk from DOS will remove them entirely.

Try running it in Safemode or in a Command Prompt Start. See he

Err Msg: ScanDisk Has Restarted 10 Times Because Windows...

Or try this:

ScanDefrag 5.2

or EndItAll

Mike,
Many thanks. This has worked perfectly. I have now run standard Scandisk from
Safe Mode and this ran absolutely normally. revealing several faults which it
repaired.The Defrag then worked perfectly.
Thanks also for the advice you sent me on booting into Safe Mode - i.e.
keep tapping the Cntrl or F8 key as PC is powered up.
Thanks again
..Paul

Sounds like good advice but I hate safe mode. All my icons want to take up
new residences elsewhere and I have to retrain them. I accomplish the same
thing by using ctrl, alt, delete and close each program one at a time except
systray and explorer. After that scandisk and defrag work fine.

XP has eliminated that problem. It used to drive me nuts when I had Me.

Check out this handy utility. You 'save' your desktop icon layout, and
can restore it anytime your desktop gets messed up. I have used it for
years and it works faultlessly on WinME.

http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

quote

Icon Restore installs LAYOUT.DLL (along with the required registry
entries) from Microsoft. Two new options are added to the pop up menu
that opens when any Windows system icon (ex. My Computer) is right
clicked. These options are "Save Desktop Icon Layout" and "Restore
Desktop Icon Layout".

And here's another fine application for restoring desktop icons:

http://www.sillysot.com/

It has many other features but the really invaluable one is its ability to
put all icons back where you left them (provided that you save their
positions before entering Safe Mode).
