Default Networking problems...

Someone gave me a Gateway desktop running Windows ME.
I believe they had AOL dialup on it at one time.
I put a network card in (D-Link DFE-530TX+), which installed fine. I set ip
address, etc., but can't get on internet or ping anything beyond the nic.
Cable is fine, port in cable router is fine. I removed & added TCP/IP back
in, ran winsockfix, but still noithing works.
What am I overlooking?!?!?

check you don't have any proxy settings enabled
check your firewall (if any) - disable temporarily for testing
