Default Kernel32 start up error

my daughter somehow wiped out some files and when I try
to reinstall windows 98 using both the floppy start up
disk and the Windows 98 installation cd, the floppy runs
thru the generic cd drivers however there is a message
indicating that no drives were found. If I try to re-
install using only the my cdrom, it does not work either.
When I try to start from safe mode a message appears for
only a few seconds and then the computer shuts down
again. I think the message says that there is a problem
having something to do with Kernel 32. !!!!!Help!!!!!!!!!
I have a emachines 400 computer and i do not have the
original boot disk that came with it !!!!!

Default Kernel32 start up error

(1) You may be in for a long haul...
http://search.support.microsoft.com/...SD=GN&LN=EN-US MSKB
Search "Kernel32"; Windows 98; Title Only; Exact Phrase; produces over a
page full.

http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/errkrn32.htm
Many are here too.

http://aumha.org/a/k32fix.htm
Eshelman's page about Kernel32 errors.

Invalid Page Faults:
http://aumha.org/kbeipf.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/support...rmsg/kbipf.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q286/1/80.ASP

(2) Here is what mine looks like in Win98SE...

KERNEL32.DLL
Desc: Win32 Kernel core component
Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Size: 471,040 bytes
Mod: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM
Ver: 4.10.2222

If it comes to reinstalling it, that is old enough never to have been
Windows Updated. Therefore it will be fine right out of the .cabs.

Here is how to do it in DOS...

(a) DIR /s /a C:\KERNEL32.DLL
Will say whether you have it, & where it is. Should be in
"C:\Windows\System"

C:\DIR /s /a C:\KERNEL32.DLL
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
KERNEL32 DLL 471,040 04-23-99 10:22p KERNEL32.DLL
1 file(s) 471,040 bytes

(b)
"EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System LOC\Base4.cab Kernel32.dll"

That is all one line between the quotes, but do not enter the quotes.
It will offer to overwite, if one is already there.

LOC is the location of "Base4.cab". This may be discovered as
follows...

C:\DIR /s /a C:\base4.cab
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
BASE4 CAB 168,960 04-23-99 10:22p BASE4.CAB
1 file(s) 168,960 bytes

If you have the .cabs on a CD, you will use your CD-ROM drive letter,
instead of "C:\" in that DIR command.

So, in my case, the command is...

"EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\Base4.cab
Kernel32.dll"

All one line: no quotes: there are 5 spaces in the line, including one
after "Base4.cab".

You want to do a FRESH Install? Are you pure Windows or OEM, such as
Compaq? If you are OEM, then you can get back to factory condition by
using their recovery CD, such as QuickRestore, which may contain
proprietary drivers and add-ons. Otherwise...

How to Reinstall Windows into a new folder

"Setup.txt", located in the same folder as "Setup.exe", either on CD or
hard drive. This instructs how to run it from a folder on the hard
drive, but "hexff" says it better.

Get a Startup Diskette from
http://www.bootdisk.com/ , if you don't already have one from "Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab". Test the Startup
Diskette. Boot it, put in a CD and "DIR" the CD. It will say which
letter is the CD. (Otherwise, it is likely one letter higher than
normal.)

Here is what I know of those Installation CD's. The full list of
capabilities of each type of CD is as follows, says Harper. Each
requires a valid Product key. "Proof" means it must see you had a prior
version. So, if it isn't sitting there, expect to insert a floppy or
earlier CD.

FULL VERSION: Will perform either clean install or upgrade of existing
OS. Does not ask for proof of ownership of an earlier version.

UPGRADE VERSION: Will perform either clean install or upgrade of
existing OS. Will ask for proof of ownership of an earlier version if
one is not installed.

WIN98 SE UPDATES: Will only install if Windows 98 is present on the hard
drive. Cannot be used for a clean install at all.

OEM VERSION: Only installs on a clean, fresh-formatted hard drive. May
be customized to include or omit components that would be found/not
found on a retail CD.

Be sure of your ProductKey...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion
ProductKey "12345-12345-12345-12345-12345"

(1) "START, Run, RegEdit"
(2) Click plus signs beginning at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", & ending with
"Windows".
(3) Click "CurrentVersion" in the left pane under "Windows".
(4) Look in right pane for ProductKey.

That is the one that was used to install your current Windows. Jot it
down, as it may work if different from the one on your Windows 98 Manual
or CD case.
