Default Installing an additional 1 GB of memory

I want to install an additional 1 GB of memory.
The computer will not accept it.
I was told to make an entry in the system.ini file.
I made the following entry-
MaxFileCache=524288
It didn't work.
What am I doing wrong?
Thankyou
Ed

Default Installing an additional 1 GB of memory

First read here and help us help you:
http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

Have you determined that your computer's motherboard can support another GB of RAM,
by looking in the manual for your motherboard or your computer make and model?

What is the make/model of the computer and/or the motherboard? How much memory did
you have installed already, and how many modules were there? What size modules are
you installing now? Are they the same type of RAM?

By "will not accept it", what do you mean exactly? What happens? Does the memory
appear in the memory count when you start the computer? Does the installed amount
show in the BIOS setup?

Default Installing an additional 1 GB of memory

The amount of RAM is limited by both the motherboard/BIOS and by the
operating system.

Win98 is limited to 1Gig total, and has problems with 512 Meg or more,
unless you take some actions. See links below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304943/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181862/EN-US/
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253912/EN-US/

As for the motherboard/BIOS, a PC that originally had win98 as its operating
system is unlikely to be able to handle that much RAM. I had a Gateway from
mid-1998 that was limited to 386 Meg.

Check the motherboard or PC-maker support website for information about
maximum RAM.

Finally, be aware that RAM usually should not be "mixed" in terms of speed
or type. Mixing brands may work, if the memory has the same specifications.
As for "type", there are several, but only one (maybe two) are right for any
one PC. Again, check the motherboard manual, website, or PC-maker
documentation or webiste for guidance. Some RAM must be replaced as matched
pairs, other RAM can be added in any size or number that fits.

Ed, in addition to what has been said, the entry you mentioned MUST go
immediately under a specific heading in your system.ini called:
[vcache]

Is it?
