Default How to put this forum into my Favorites?

This may sound really stupid but I can't figure out how to put this forum
into my Favorites. I get here by using this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx,
then have go through all the selections (English, Windows, Windows 98, etc.)
on the left of the screen under Community Newsgroups. How do I get the
address just for Windows 98 General or Windows 98 Outlook Express? Thanks,

Create a shortcut in your Favorites using the following URL...
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...gen_discussion

That will take you HERE through your default News Client. This is the preferable way to
access News groups !

Otherwise use the following Web Based CDO URL which only a newbie would use.
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgro...-us;newsgroups

A statement from our long lost wherever he is MS MVP George (Bindar =
Dundat)
quote
CDO posters
You are using the web interface (CDO) to access the news groups. In that =
case the links are not active and further more if anyone were to post a =
message which contains a small file to fix your problem, the file would =
be stripped from the message. A better way is to open Outlook Express, =
go to ToolsAccountsNewsAdd. When you get to the page for filling in =
your Email address, I suggest that you use a fake address. Spammers =
harvest addresses from News Groups. See mine as an example but make sure =
that you do not use a real domain name. The next page will ask for the =
News (NNTP) Server name. Enter msnews.microsoft.com. Complete the wizard =
and click =E2=80=9CNews Groups=E2=80=9D. it will take a while to load =
the list but it only requires that you do it once. You can then scroll =
down the list and D-click any group that you want to subscribe to.

Please read the following pointers.
(1) Before setting up the account, go to ToolsMessage RulesNewsNew =
and create a rule that says;
a) In the top box, place a check in =E2=80=9CWhere the message was sent =
more than days ago=E2=80=9D
b) In the center box, place checks in =E2=80=9CMark it as read=E2=80=9D =
and =E2=80=9CDelete it=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9CStop processing more =
Rules=E2=80=9D
c) In the bottom box, click on the word =E2=80=9Cdays=E2=80=9D (in blue) =
and set it to a reasonable time frame. Hint: I keep mine at 15, but =
choose what is good for you.

(2) Recently I have had several people who thought that they still had =
to go back to the web interface to send a reply or to post a new =
message. Not so! The appropriate buttons are located on the OE toolbar. =
To make a reply you select the message that you wish to reply to and =
click =E2=80=9CReply Group=E2=80=9D. It can also be done by R-clicking =
the message.

(3) You can use ViewCurrent ViewShow replies to my messages to reduce =
the viewed list to only the threads that you have been involved in. =
Depending on what version of Outlook Express you are using and what =
updates you have done, you may be able to use Ctrl+H to do the same =
thing. Reversing the procedure will show all messages again.

(4) Click the =E2=80=9C+=E2=80=9D sign to expand the message threads.

(5) Please stay in the same thread for each question that you post. It =
makes it much easier for us to follow.

(6) To simplify the setup procedure, you can copy and paste the =
following line into your browser address bar.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...gen_discussion . You =
will still have to go to ToolsAccountsNews, select the news account, =
click =E2=80=9CProperties=E2=80=9D and change the Email address to a =
fake. If you get a message that say=E2=80=99s your Email address does =
not appear to be valid, tell OE to use it anyway.

(7) To change to a different news group click on the =
=E2=80=9CNewsgroups=E2=80=9D button and pick another from the list.

(8) Print out these directions.

When you have completed all of the above and you can read the newsgroup =
in your Outlook Express. It is time to read the tips about creating a =
good post, available on this page http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm
Last, but not least, are the all important =E2=80=9CRules of =
Conduct=E2=80=9D

To connect directly to this site, copy the following into your browser's
Address Bar. After this, you will no longer need to connect through the
CDO. You will use Outlook Express to access the NG.

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...gen_discussion
However,
(1) At "OE, Tools menu, Message Rules, News", create a Message Rule to
delete posts older than, say, 10 days. Also check "stop processing more
rules".
(2) At "Tools, Options, Read tab", uncheck "Get xxx headers at a time".
(3) R-Clk the NG in the left pane, Synchronize Settings, set to All
Messages.
(4) Click "Tools, Synchronize Newsgroup"

(Now, it is a bit tricky. When I click one of those things, it gets
right to it. One really need stop it & get that rule in. I do believe,
it will then not download older than the rule specifies.)

Posts older than 10 days will not download. Posts that age on your
machine after the download are your responsibility to delete, by
occasionally going to that rule & clicking "Apply Now". After that,
compact: "OE, File menu, Folder, Compact all folders".

Colorado disagrees, but there is a cave-dwelling MVP around, who says...

(1) "OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance tab".
(2) Uncheck "Delete news messages x days after being downloaded".
(3) Uncheck "Compact messages in the background".

Thanks for all the great replies but I'm a little confused. In the past I
used OE to access NG's but some of my posts never got posted (lost in
neverland or something). I also had trouble "searching" for posts and I was
told by several people (including a MS MVP) that I was much better off
accessing the NG through my internet browser. Now the advice I am hearing is
to use OE. I guess things have changed in the last couple of years. I guess
I'll go back to using OE for NG's. Thanks for the help. Mack

Yea, OE is fine. Just occasionally perhaps trim the NG .dbx (the
database file that holds the posts in the OE Store) with a message rule
to delete very old posts. Definitely, occasionally "OE, File menu,
Folder, Compact All Folders". That's all.
