Default ME Detects but doesn't install printer

My friend has an HP Officejet G55 printer connected via USB. He doesn't know
what happened, but it is not working. We have tried reinstalling the drivers
and when we connect the USB cable it says new hardware was found and says
that it installed the G55 drivers, but once it's done, no printer has been
installed. The printer shows up in Device Driver under some DOT4 type
categories, but no printer. Trying to install the printer manually is no
help, because it does not give the option to use a USB port, just parrellel
or COM port. Any suggestions? Thanks.
