Need Advice
I'm changing my DSL ISP's and the new one says they require W98SE. I
have a W98 SE Updates CD but have never needed to install it before. My question is, Is there anything I should be aware of, or do prior to making the upgrade. Thanks, Paul |

I guess you are just going to have to try it and see how it works. I
recently used an OEM SE Updates CD issued by HP and the PC would not boot after installing SE. This update was to a fresh load of W98 and all attempts to fix it failed. I finally just reinstalled W98 using the HP restore CD and all was well. If I never have to work on an HP or Compaq again it will be too soon :-( -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo ""Lou"" wrote in message ... The update CD is said to be very buggy, so why not buy a full copy of 98 SE
on eBay, which should be going cheap due to the fact that support for 98 ends on 30 June 2006. I don't know where you heard it but I suspect that what you heard is not
true. The Updates CD is nearly identical (if not exactly identical) to the Upgrade CD except for the installation routine that requires Updates to be installed over a working copy of W98. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Eric" wrote in message ... I've used the "upgrade" and the "update" CD ...the only problem I've had is
when the OS had pre-existing problems Cheers! "Ron Badour" wrote in message ... I don't know where you heard it but I suspect that what you heard is not true. If you used the first OEM upgrade disk from HP (they issued 2, you had to
ask for the second) it contained a bad hard drive controller driver (HP version. Was that the esdi_506? Sorry don't remember the exact file) which would naturally not let the system load... ran in to several customers 'way back when' that had that problem. "Ron Badour" wrote in message ...
