Mouse not recognized

I'm running windows ME and the system is not detecting the mouse. I can
start up in safe mode and the mouse is recognized. I have a feeling my PC is
infected. Any suggestions on fixes?

What makes you think it is infected? Has your virus checker highlighted a
problem?
Make sure the definitions are up to date.

However, if only this mouse issue, then you don't say what sort of mouse -
PS/2, USB, Wireless, etc., but it sounds like your mouse driver is no longer
being properly recognised, is incorrectly set-up, or is corrupted.

Boot into Safe Mode and in Device Manager, 'Remove' any/all mouse(s) then
re-boot.
WinMe will re-detect (Plug&Play) your mouse then should install the
'correct' drivers.

If you mouse requires special software (e.g. Intellipoint) then have your
software driver disk ready in case it required.
