Default DVD player installation with Windows 98SE

Yes, I am trying to play a DVD movie. I have Windows Media Player 9.0 because
I am running Windows 98SE and that is all it will hold. I have tried in the
past to play DVDs with Windows Media Player but I cannot but to be honest I
have no clue what I am doing.

Are the files you are trying to open a DVD movie?

In that case, you need a DVD movie player, not DVD device drivers.

Windows Media Player should be OK. What version are you running?

If you are trying to open some other type of files, then indicate what type
of files they are, and exactly what happens when you try to open them.

The computer recongnizes the DVD player and I can open the files on the
DVD
but cannot play them.

No version of Windows includes the decoder software necessary to play DVD
movies. You need to install a DVD decoder software package. I don't know
of any stand-alone decoders but installing any DVD player software (like
WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc) will give Windows Media Player the ability to play
DVD movies.

The software that you need would have been supplied with the DVD drive, but
it's not the drivers. It's additional software that is invariably bundled
with the drive and which provides your applications, such as Media Player,
with the ability to understand DVD movies. Media Player 9 should be OK,
except that it appears you do not have the required supporting software
installed.

Here's a description:

There are free and commercial players available for Windows 98. Note that I
haven't used or tested any of these.
