Default Cannot access the internet from a 98SE PC on an XP network

I have a home network with 4 PCs. One is running 98SE and the others XP. They
are all connected via a router and the router is connected to the internet
via a cable modem. The 98SE PC has access to the other PCs on the network and
vice versa. The 98SE PC has not been active for awhile and there were
multiple 98SE updates required. In the course of updating this PC, this PC
lost the ability to access the internet and can't even access the router. All
the other PCs can still access the internet. I have run the network set-up
disk from an XP PC on the 98SE PC. I have tried reloading 98SE. All to no
avail. So, what are my next steps?

BTW, when I try to access the internet from the 98SE PC I get the following
error message:

res://windows/system/shdoclc.dll DNS error

Most likely a TCP/IP Winsock problem caused by spyware being uninstalled.

Some spyware modify the TCP/IP stack and when they are uninstalled they
destroy your ability network. I've not heard of this problem with a 98
update, however if SP2 is installed on an XP machine with some types of
spyware the TCP/IP stack is corrupted. I guess it's possible a recent 98
update could have done this.
