Default Scan Disk Defrag stop - Disk Surface Corrupted?

After a recommended driver update, Scan Disk and Defrad stopped working. I attempted to run a Defrag by another application (System Mechanics) and I get a warning message that it encountered a problem indicating physical corruption on the disk surface. I run System File Checker and I got news that File setupx.dll may be corrupted. After this I noticed many Icons look different (blank if with fuzzy color dots). The driver update appears to have been installed but it is still there to be downloaded again. Comp and internet runs ok but what can I make out of this mess? How can I locate the downloaded driver? What steps should I take to fix this problem? Thanks very much.

go to the website of your harddrives mfg and see if they have a diagnostic
utility

if it shows the drive as being defective...it's best to replace it before it
fails entirely
