lose dsl connection every 8 minutes
Hello, Friend had SBC Yahoo DSL installed. DSL worked fine on tech's laptop.
When installed on friends computer the connection last 8 minutes then states that it lost the connection. The only way to reconnect is to restart the computer. Then 8 minutes and same happens, does not matter if you surf or let it sit. The SBC tech tried but no fix, their reponsibility ends with a working connection. The 56k modem works without problem. The computer operates without problem. No screen saver, power options set to none Has Windows98, IE6, OE6, intergrated MB, AMD K6 300mhz, 256 memory minus 64kb shared video. AVG Free AV, Kerio Free Firewall. thank you. take care. beamish. |

Primarily, this is a matter for the ISP to troubleshoot. I hear, though, that this hasn't been successful. I see a lot of these failures consequent to spyware. The simplest solution for many is to look in Add/Remove Programs and see if Viewpoint is present - this sneaks in and plays havoc in somewhat bizarre ways with Internet connectivity, Outlook behavior, VPN connections, browser functions, etc. Remove it - the uninstall works well. Past this simple step, here are the steps I recommend for scanning your system for other parasites that may be behind the problem: http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm -- Jim Eshelman, MS-MVP Windows/Security Windows Support Center: http://aumha.org/ AumHa Forums: http://aumha.net/ |

Thanks for stopping by, Jim. It is great to hear from you. Please feel free
to visit this newsgroup frequently. IMO, the more MVP's the better especially when they are experienced like you, Jeff Richards, Gary S. Terhune, et. all. smile Yeah, my housemate who is less computer savvy than I had Viewpoint install on his computer and it was actually 3 different programs. I think it is kinda crazy that it is Viewpoint Media Player and looks almost identical to Windows Media Player from Microsoft. I think this was intentional but I await your opinion on how it enters people's computers and whether this garbage tries to look like the legitimate Windows Media Player by Microsoft by only shaving off half a letter from the first word. Thanks in advance for a response and I look forward to hearing from you. (aside: Original poster -- I am not trying to steal the spotlight from you and your problem -- I just have a quick aside for Jim) Thanks Again! I know that the more Microsoft drives people to the web interface of the newsgroups, the more MVPs are leaving to find other places to serve better. I spend most of my time on my own support forums these days (see sig), but get here when I can. (And besides, you're in very good hands with the likes of Jeff and GAry!) Having Wild Tangent present is one way - Viewpoint eventually will show up. But some machines that have never had Wild Tangent (or its common companion, Weatherbug) still get Viewpoint, so that isn't the only route. If that was present, you might want to try a genreal screen-and-clean anyway, following the steps I suggested at http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm. -- Jim Eshelman, MS-MVP Windows/Security Windows Support Center: http://aumha.org/ AumHa Forums: http://aumha.net/ |

Thanks Jim. I bookmarked the page and will inform my roomate but I do not
know if he will comply since he is very protective of his machine as I am (I use BIOS password and screen saver password ever since I let two housemates use my machine and one caused a Blue Screen of Death -- I don't know how he did it and the other roomate caused the warning light to appear on my Falcon Nortwest Computer -- it is an amber light that has never been on except in this one case and I do not know how he made it come on or even what this light does or when/why it is used -- maybe you know what it does?) I backed up my necessary files and did a full unistall and clean install after that. Anyway, he does not know too much about computers and probably feels intimated since I know quite a lot about them. "Jim Eshelman" wrote in message ... : Dan wrote: : Thanks for stopping by, Jim. The manual for that machine should tell you what the light means.

All the information the manual gave was that the amber light was rarely used.
I guess I could open my case up and check where it is attached to the MB. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... : The manual for that machine should tell you what the light means. : : -- : Gary S.
