It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without which any current restore points are just space fillers. To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the file, and select Properties. What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch. To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download the patch for offline install http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q290700 Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time, clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and creating a single new one. You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "bonifacia" wrote in message ... i tried numerous times to do a system restore ... it shuts down before it finishes then it restarts , but unable to restore. tried numerous times. now i don't have system restore within system tools.? but a system restore icon appeared on my desktop... i then clicked the sr icon and the same thing... no restore point. |

Maybe you don't have enough disk space allocated to system restore. That
will shut it down (with no explanation, I think). Try Help, System Restore. It's unlikely that that would be the cause - but possible.
Boni Check the space allocated to SR - System Properties|Performance|File System How much is actually being used? Noel: If I may, I have three of these files (smgr.dll) present, one system and two options files, all the same with 211 KB's. Is it ok to delete one of the options files, since they seem to be duplicates? The version is up-to-date. Harry. "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Harry,
I've got to ask: why do you feel a need to delete a 211KB file? Basically, they're not duplicates. One is the copy of the updated file - the backup. The other is the original version, in it's .cab file. You mustn't start trying to delete files from within the cabs. Shane "webster72n" wrote in message ...
