Default programs missing

Recently had my computer off for 10 days. When trying to boot up had a lot
of problems. Finally got it running and found that several programs were
missing like MS word, MSworks. Windows media player wouldn't work. CD
burner wouldn't work. Maybe others I don't know about yet. Had to reinstall
these programs. Now found out that my config.sys file is missing. Can't use
it in Start, Run,.
How can I get my config.sys file back?
Anyone have an idea what happened? McAffee doesn't show any infected files.

Config.sys is not needed by W98--other programs may use it. I don't know
what you expect to happen trying to run it from Start, Run but nothing is
going to happen other than an error message.

As to what happened--I suspect that the registry got clobbered and a really
old one may have been restored. At this point, the first thing I would do
is determine what brand of hard drive you have, go to the maker's web site
and download their diagnostic software. It runs from a floppy disk and will
tell you the health of your drive. If it is OK and there are no other
problems, I have no further suggestions.

Thankyou I will try that.
I used to use Start, run, config.sys and was able to select which programs
ran at start up. There was a whole list of programs under start up which I
could select or unselect.
Now when I went into Sys.edit the window that should have the config.sys
items is completely blank.
Would it be on my original Win 98 disk?

Your remembrance is incorrect.....what you type in the Run box to get what you
describe is msconfig

No, as was already explained, config.sys is not needed by Windows. That means that
unless a program creates the file for some particular entry it needs, or you create
the file yourself for some particular entry that you need for a program, config.sys
either will not exist or will be blank. That is how it should be.....it's normal.

You are absolutely right. Thankyou so much.
I just turned 70 last week and I guess it's beginning to be apparent.
MSconfig works great.
Forgive the waste of time

Well, Happy Birthday to You! My Significant Other turns 56 a week from today.

No waste of time involved. Lots of folks post, asking, "what's the name of that
utility in Windows again....."
