Default Windows ME and Pop Ups

Grande wrote:

I have been running Windows ME for some time. A few months
ago, I switched from dial up to my girlfriends DSL. She is
running Windows XP Professional on her machine. She has
been experiencing system disabling pop ups for some time.
I found that Spybot helps keep those to a minimum.
Recently, I tried to run a movie clip a friend sent me. I
had an older version of Windows Media Player on my ME
machine. The clip wouldn't run, and asked if I wanted to
upgrade Media Player. Since I had not had a problem in the
past doing so, I opted for the upgrade.
Now, I too am the victim of pop up ads. I get tool bars,
N-Case, and many others. When I open Microsoft Explorer
web browser, I get a blinding flurry of pop up ads filling
my screen.
What the hey?!?! I thought with ME I didn't have the hole
in my operating system that lets pop ups in. What
happened?? How can I go back to the system configuration I
used to have that kept me pop up free???

You could try the solution that worked for your girlfriend. And/or limit
WMP's access to the net using a firewall.
