Win98 Files Upgraded to XP
I recently upgraded my windows from 98 to XP. In my impatience I completly
forgot to backup any files or do any major preparation for an upgrade. My old documents are now gone and I was wondering if there is any possible way to retreive them be it downgrading back to 98 or something of that nature. The minimalist of help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

You can't find *any* of your old files? Have you used Search to see if they
aren't hidden somewhere? Did you delete or reformat any partitions during the upgrade? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Piwowar" wrote in message ... Win98 Files Upgraded to XP
When I upgraded I had to delete the original partition. I did a search on all
files including hidden ones and nothing came up. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote: You can't find *any* of your old files? Have you used Search to see if they aren't hidden somewhere? Did you delete or reformat any partitions during the upgrade? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com |

If you deleted the partition then the files are gone. I wasn't aware the an
upgrade from Win98 to XP required recreating or reformatting the partition. Pretty sure that's optional. Whatever, they are gone. I doubt even decent software recovery apps would help, but if you really need those files it might be worth the effort. I find RTT products to be the best. http://www.r-studio.com/ The thing to do when files are lost is to quit using the machine. Best to install the hard drive to another machine where the data recovery software is installed. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Piwowar" wrote in message ... As a added note to Gary's comments:
XP is so much larger than W98 that it is a good bet that all files have been overwritten by the XP installation. If this is the case, recovery software won't help. The demo software Gary recommended will at least allow you to see if any files are recoverable before you have to lay out cash. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2007 "Gary S.
