Evening here Job! - Use the Extract tool in msconfig.exe to extract the
mfc42.dll file and put it in a temporary folder. But after you've completed
the whole exercise, the expanded 'correct' file needs only to be in your
Windows\System folder. Hope that makes sense g

Morning Mart,

Thanks for your input and heck yes I will give it a try. At
least I will experience something new as I have never
ventured into the Windows\Options area nor have I ever
"extracted files".

Job remembers the old sayings, "Fools rush in where angels

Maybe... The only other 'fix' that I can recall for

WordPad issues is the
old MFC42.DLL mishmash chestnut which can affect both

WordPad and Paint.

This is another *possible* solution - if you are prepared

to give it a try.

BTW - Don't forget, as you've only edited your registry,

you can run SR to
get back to where you started the other day so that you

are back to your
original problem.

Then do a search for any/all copies of mfc42.dll that

exist on your PC and
for the moment, make a note of their locations AND their

versions and dates.
(Right-click / Properties)

The correct WinMe version of mfc42.dll is 6.0.8665.0 dated

8 June 2000 at
1700 Hrs.

If you have any other version(s) on your PC then continue.

Search your C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or Install sub-folders

for the
WIN_12.CAB and open and extract/copy mfc42.dll to a

temporary folder. (This
will the correct version mentioned above - although it

*may* show "today's
date" once you've extracted it.)

Now boot into safe mode and rename any/all of the 'wrong

version' copies
that you made a note of, to e.g. mfc42.old and be sure to

copy the correct
version to the Windows\System folder. (You only NEED one

copy and it SHOULD
BE located in the System folder)

Reboot into Normal Mode and try WordPad (and Paint) again

to see if it/they
now work OK

If no improvement - you can always reverse the above steps

g

BTW - As Alan has already alluded, WordPad is incorporated

into WinMe by
design unlike Paint which is optional. It was however,

optional in both
Win95 & Win98

HTH and good luck.

Mart here is an update.

I did an Explorer search for mfc42.dll and found it in two
locations.
WINDOWS\SYSTEM (Ver 6.0.8665.0, Date 6/8/2000 17:00)
Program Files\Online Services\Earthlink (Ver 4.21.0.7160,
7/14/1999 12:14)

I right-clicked the Earthlink location, deleted it and
restarted. I still get the "Wordpad has caused an error in
unknown." message when I try to start Wordpad.

BTW although there was no need to extract mfc42.dll from the
Options\Install sub-folder, I assume that extracting a file
does not totally remove it from the sub-folder?
Oh well, it would be a good idea for me to do some reading
on "extraction".

Thanks for your help. I always learn something from folks

OK Job, it would appear that you only had two (working) copies on your
machine, the correct one in your Widows\System folder (which you have
rightly left alone) and an older one (which you have now rightly deleted) in
your Earthlink folder. You are therefore correct in saying that you don't
need to extract a 'fresh' copy.

So, sadly, this in not the 'fix' for your particular problem - but had to be
worth a try g. Pity, but in the meantime it *might* be worth trawling the
MS Knowledge Base, using "WordPad" as your selective search/keyword and
"Windows Millennium" as your system, to see if there is anything else there
which might ring a bell

BTW - You are also correct - 'extracting' a copy DOES NOT remove it from the
CAB folder and for further reading :-

Thanks Mart,
I did go tip toeing through the tulips in the Knowledge Base
and Google looking for Wordpad error items. I was unable to
find any help other than what you and Alan already
identified.

As I said in my original post I don't use Wordpad much
however it would be nice
to understand how to recover from this glitch.

I really appreciate the time you have taken and your words

Just a thought, but it may be worth checking the version number for WordPad
itself -
Do a Search for "Wordpad"
The Wordpad.exe file should be in the C:\Program Files\Accessories folder,
200KB, dated 8th June 2000, v5.0.1691.1
Any other Wordpad.exe files should be deleted
You should also have
WORDPAD.CHM
WORDPAD.CNT
WORDPAD.HLP
Wordpad (no extension) - this is the shortcut in the Programs folder.
r-click on it, select Properties, and make sure that it's configured
properly.... the Target is "C:\Program Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe"
(INCLUDING the quotes!)
if there's anything else in the 'Target' bot, then delete it.

I really appreciate the time you have taken and your words
of wisdom. Take care.

OK Job, it would appear that you only had two (working)

copies on your
machine, the correct one in your Widows\System folder

(which you have
rightly left alone) and an older one (which you have now

rightly deleted) in
your Earthlink folder. You are therefore correct in saying

that you don't
need to extract a 'fresh' copy.

So, sadly, this in not the 'fix' for your particular

problem - but had to be
worth a try g. Pity, but in the meantime it *might* be

worth trawling the
MS Knowledge Base, using "WordPad" as your selective

search/keyword and
"Windows Millennium" as your system, to see if there is

anything else there
which might ring a bell

BTW - You are also correct - 'extracting' a copy DOES NOT

remove it from the
CAB folder and for further reading :-

Mart here is an update.

I did an Explorer search for mfc42.dll and found it in

two
locations.
WINDOWS\SYSTEM (Ver 6.0.8665.0, Date 6/8/2000 17:00)
Program Files\Online Services\Earthlink (Ver

4.21.0.7160,
7/14/1999 12:14)

I right-clicked the Earthlink location, deleted it and
restarted. I still get the "Wordpad has caused an error

in
unknown." message when I try to start Wordpad.

BTW although there was no need to extract mfc42.dll from

the
Options\Install sub-folder, I assume that extracting a

file
does not totally remove it from the sub-folder?
Oh well, it would be a good idea for me to do some

reading
on "extraction".

Thanks for your help. I always learn something from

folks
like you regardless of whether I'm posting or lurking.

"Mart" wrote in message

Maybe... The only other 'fix' that I can recall for
WordPad issues is the
old MFC42.DLL mishmash chestnut which can affect both
WordPad and Paint.

This is another *possible* solution - if you are

prepared
to give it a try.

BTW - Don't forget, as you've only edited your

registry,
you can run SR to
get back to where you started the other day so that you
are back to your
original problem.

Then do a search for any/all copies of mfc42.dll that
exist on your PC and
for the moment, make a note of their locations AND

their
versions and dates.
(Right-click / Properties)

The correct WinMe version of mfc42.dll is 6.0.8665.0

dated
8 June 2000 at
1700 Hrs.

If you have any other version(s) on your PC then

continue.

Search your C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or Install

sub-folders
for the
WIN_12.CAB and open and extract/copy mfc42.dll to a
temporary folder. (This
will the correct version mentioned above - although it
*may* show "today's
date" once you've extracted it.)

Now boot into safe mode and rename any/all of the

'wrong
version' copies
that you made a note of, to e.g. mfc42.old and be sure

to
copy the correct
version to the Windows\System folder. (You only NEED

one
copy and it SHOULD
BE located in the System folder)

Reboot into Normal Mode and try WordPad (and Paint)

again
to see if it/they
now work OK

If no improvement - you can always reverse the above

steps
g

BTW - As Alan has already alluded, WordPad is

incorporated
into WinMe by
design unlike Paint which is optional. It was however,
optional in both
Win95 & Win98

HTH and good luck.
