Default Problem With Upgrade

Hi all,

Forgive me if I am posting this to the wrong group.

I am trying to upgrade my ME machine to XP. When the system restarted I get
a missing VMM32.VXD error and cannot proceed. The error comes after the
Windows ME splash screen, so I am taking that as a sign that the upgrade is
not complete.

I am lost as to what to do next. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,

George

Default Problem With Upgrade

If you are seeing the Win Me splash screen then this means you haven't
upgraded however it would appear that vmm32.vxd and probably most other
Win Me device drivers have been deleted as they are not used in XP. What
messages did you see during the upgrade? Did anything suggest that not
everything was going as intended?

How to proceed? I suspect with difficulty. Personally I'd reload the
backup of my system partition that I had made before starting the upgrade
but assuming that you didn't make a backup then I would probably look to
make a clean install of XP. If you only have an upgrade version of XP
then have your Win Me CD handy so that you can insert it when requested to
confirm your authority to be using an upgrade copy. If however you only
have an OEM Win Me recovery disk(s) then you might have to resort to using
this to restore your PC and Win Me to the state it was in when you first
bought the PC.

First however I would try upgrading again by rebooting your PC with the XP
CD inserted and see what happens. You could strike lucky and the upgrade
proceed without further problems.

Thank you for the response.

Nothing appeared to indicate a problem during the install.

Of course I did not backup the partition (or anything else) prior to
this....that would be to easy.

If I restore from the OEM disks, will I lose my personal stuff or will the
overlay just replace the system files?

Thanks again,

George

You will lose everything you added to the disk, including personal stuff
and any programs you installed since you bought the computer.

Back up is a computer user's best friend.

Yes, OEM disks only do clean installs. They require disk formatting. If
you can't boot to the drive, switch the primary drive to another drive you
can boot to. If you don't have another drive, you're going to have to buy
one if you want to save any data. They're cheap. I paid $50 after rebates
to Circuit City for a 120 GB drive. Get one at least as big as the used
space on your drive plus the space needed for the OS and install the OEM on
that. Set your current drive up as secondary and you can save your data, or
you can use the new drive for XP and leave your current drive on as
secondary, but you might want to save data and install on your current drive
so you have 2 bootable drives in case the other one breaks like your current
one did.

Yes, OEM disks only do clean installs.

This isn't true of all OEM disks. Some drop an image onto the disk
removing everything that was already there, others actually install Win Me
and require an empty formatted partition whilst others allow the user the
option of either restoring their system to the state it was in when first
delivered or performing a repair install by reinstalling Win Me over the
existing system without the loss of either installed applications or data.
However desirable as the last option might be it does now have a couple of
gotchas. One has to be aware of first removing WMP9 and IE6 (if
installed) before proceeding and also the need to use a third party tool
such as Belarc's Advisor to check which updates need to be reinstalled as
the repair install does not reset the flags in the registry used buy the
Windows Update site to keep track of which patches have been installed.
