Default Explorer stops responding after trying to open a file

I need some help with a problem with my PC. I have an old
Dell Dimension PC, one previous owner, that I've had for
about a year. There was nothing seriously wrong with it
until about two days ago, when I tried to click on "My
Documents" and the cursor turned into the hourglass, but I
let it sit for several hours without it doing anything.
The screen didn't freeze but when I tried to close
programs the dialog box said that Explorer was not
responding. I have no problem turning the computer on,
but after my desktop loads, I can not open anything on the
desktop and the start menu won't come up.
If anyone can help, I'd be grateful. (I've been using a
public computer.) Please email me at
. I have to fix this
somehow; I can't afford a new computer and I'm going to
college in about a year.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
