Default Internet Explorer not working

I have Windows ME on my Intel Celeron 2Ghz desktop PC.
Recently, a friend of mine (I thought he was really tech
savvy) did some editing in my system registry and since
then my internet explorer has stopped working. I have a
broadband internet connection (128kbps) and have been
reconfirmed by the service provider that the service is
running.

After connecting to the internet, whenever I open the
Internet explorer and type any website name, it instantly
gives "this page can not be be displayed" error.

Please help me out of this deadlock !! Many thanks in
advance.

After you open Internet Explorer click on tools and then click on options.
Under your connections tab you probably shouldn't have anything listed in
the connections. Under LAN settings put in any proxy settings given to you
by your ISP (probably aren't any.) Make sure that "Never Dial a Connection"
is ticked. Close IE and re-open it. Does it work?

If that doesn't work go ahead and, assuming you remember how you did it,
remove your current connection from the control panel and completely set up
a new one. It only takes a minute or two and the wizard walks you through it
pretty easily. You can do it from the same screen that you had open in
Internet Explorer by clicking the "Setup" button that's sitting on the
connections tab.

If that doesn't work let us know.

Can't help with your problem, but NEVER let anyone mess
with your registry.
