Wipe free space
Are you trying to claim your dad is my aunt? I must beg to differ!
Anyhow, as for horse and cart, I can't imagine them on anything else - though I suppose it became a flatbed Bedford lorry sort of job, just never would have ocured to me. I think there are maybe a dozen pretty-clear memories from that era. I mean, of mine, though I suspect everyone remembers about a dozen scenes from early childhood (ie, no more than about a dozen). That is one of mine - looking out of the window, 3 floors up I seem to recall, seeing the 'orse and cart coming round the end of the road (about 100ft away. They were near the end of the street). Steptoe was on, though probably still in b&w, so that's what came to mind. Shane "Joan Archer" wrote in message ... I am absolutely appalled at the suggestion they should come just once a fortnight (and I believe this government is responsible for that one?)! As am I. Sadly with Red Ken in control and spending money like its going out of fashion the poor old London punter/council tax payer doesn't stand a chance. For example was I ever asked if I was prepared to pay additional council tax for the next ten years to "allow" the Olympics to come to London ... like h$ll I was! Yeah. I liked him when he had the GLC. I used to like getting on buses, paying 10p (iirc) and getting off anywhere. Though if I could I'd go back and take red tube trains instead! But it seems they all cave in eventually, all the anti-establishment figures eventually join it. They figure 'if you can't beat them, join them' and instead of fighting corruption convince themselves the best they can do is be the one in control of it! Well that's how I see it anyway. I think it's really poor that the Olympics aren't spread about the country. And such a joke to hold it in London except that the only way they'll manage to make a reliable transport system for that many on top of the numbers already moving about the network every day - assuming there are no 'points failures' etc, will be by treading on the rights of the citizen. But then this Government does nothing but. Just think what it'll be like when they try to ensure no bombs go off at that particular time! Frankly I think they'll be shooting people dead left, right and centre. They'll demonstrate that being a 'gun free' (rofl) nation makes us extremely amateurish when it comes to conducting armed operations. On the subject of the Olympics I recall on some forum this guy saying (before it was definite) if we won it, they'd be building on West Ham's training ground. I replied that some good'd come of it then! But seriously, there must be compulsory purchasing going on all over the place. Me, I think that's a resort that is almost never justifiable. And 2012 - whether Ken or Tony's baby - it's just the Millennium Dome MkII. But then there are those like my sister - she has this unaccountable respect for runners! Me, since quitting smoking I'm overweight (and hope I'll lose it *this* year!), I suffer a youth playing football like my life depended on it, playing rugby, doing karate twice a week. I did the 100 yards for the school. And since leaving school and up until a year and a half ago I rode motorbikes - in our climate. My feet are going, my knees are going, my back went years ago! Until recently I'd keep a foot in with a mate down the park of a weekend, but because I was so sporty for so long, the notion of needing to warm up escaped me, and I think I did myself permanent injuries that way! I'm bloody falling apart! And I smoked from age 13 until three years ago, but I can still run for a bus. And I don't know how many people would be prepared to take my word for it but believe me, those people we watch on the telly, running round and round? They're just weirdoes! Like we all know these days, they get off on the endorphins or whatever neurotransmitter. They're not heading anywhere! They're just running. What the Jesus H there is to respect I cannot fathom! But my sister thinks they're bloody marvellous and I know a lot of people do! Good god, like they're *making a difference*! I've got nothing against them! I see joggers, I think they're loonies, but they're harmless! My sister thinks they're related to Zeus and Athena and ol' whatsisface! The bit I like is how, between Reading and Basingstoke (and possibly up to Paddington too, but it's at Reading, on the Basingstoke platform I've seen it) First Great Western Link still have a train in 2012 Olympic Bid livery! 'Candidate City' all over it! I'd put pics up if I weren't on dial-up. Talking of floppy drives I've got a box here that has a dual floppy (5¼/3½) that first saw the light of day around 1989 in a Viglen. Not that I can remember when I last inserted a floppy of either size in the drive. I do have a usb floppy that I use to load RAID drivers when installing XP, something that can now be done using a usb pen drive with Vista. I've a feeling I'll have a USB floppy drive before long. So I'd better start dumping floppies before it happens! I very nearly bought a USB pen t'other day. I forget whether it was 512M or 1G, either way I'm not sure I'll ever quite believe it. Some of the HDD sizes now just make me want to knock my head on the desk in the hope I'll finally wake up! Sydenham! My goodness. That was my mother's family home, or rather Penge, Anerley and surrounding places (Norwood, Crystal Palace, Beckenham, etc.). As for the Rag 'n' Bone man I wonder if it was the same one I occasionally saw going down Maple Road? Penge. Almost the last place I went for Triumph spares is there. Richard Hacker. I wonder if he's in computing now? That was before they closed the Thameslink. I was able to get on a train there and get off it at Mill Hill. The World Cup was on at the time, I recall reading about Ronaldo while waiting for the train. Then they closed it and we had to change at St Pancras and it went on so long I forgot what it was like to be able to go all the way without changing. I remember looking at the dinosaurs, which looked the same as when my aunt took me there in the mid-sixties. It was nearer the mid-seventies today, I reckon. Lovely day! I bet we're all in agreement with that! She took me to the Transport Museum at Clapham and I saw Mallard, which astonishingly was running on the mainline since, though now it's in the NRM at, I believe, Doncaster. I don't suppose I have any compelling reason for it, but I suspect there is a very good chance it was the same Rag 'n' Bone man! I vaguely recall my aunt claiming he was more-or-less the last. I think she had a job in Carnaby St. I just ran the spellchecker (Since I've been making so many mistakes of late!) and for 't'other' it suggested 'totter'. Isn't that what the Rag 'n' Bone persons were? Shane Luckily they come once a week. I am absolutely appalled at the suggestion they should come just once a fortnight (and I believe this government is responsible for that one?)! In summer it stinks by the bins enough just from sitting there 1 week! And there's always some lazy, unhygienic streak in the neighbourhood. But mostly, I'm glad they come frequently enough that I was able to part for good with 95! And every DOS version earlier than 6.22! Actually I still have 5.00 on floppies, but no floppy drive anymore (and thank the stars I'm not desperate enough to reassemble the other machine that does have one!). I look forward with eager anticipation (alternatively I anticipate with forward eagerness!) the next visit from the dustbin men (Mum! It's the...I actually used to think that was a very funny show - mind you I was in Junior School at the time. I sincerely doubt now that it was a masterclass in sparkling witticisms! Though I do remember looking out my aunt's window in Sydenham and seeing the Rag'n'Bone Man doing his rounds...what relevance that has I don't know but it seems apropos someho[w]...) |
