Default WUAUCLT error in MFC42.DLL

Has anyone experienced getting a pop-up window which says:
"Wuauclt has caused an error in MFC42.DLL. Wuauclt will now close."

The computer seems to run find after I close this window, which pops up
about 10 minutes into every session, but it's odd and I would rather get rid
of it if possible.

wuauclt.exe is part of Win Me's Automatic Update mechanism and runs each
time the system boots and then periodically thereafter to check for any
updates on the Windows Update site. This error should not impact on the
operation of the operating system. Look for all copies of the file
mfc42.dll on your system and note their location and file version (Right
click, properties, and check the version tab). I suspect that you have an
incompatible version of mfc42.dll and when this is loaded it causes this
error. The correct version of mfc42.dll is v 6.00.8665.0 dated 8 June
2000 and this should be in your Windows\System folder. If you have other
copies may I suggest you temporarily rename them to say mfc42.old, reboot
and see if this fixes the problem.

Default WUAUCLT error in MFC42.DLL

Mike,

Thanks for the advice. I did have several other copies of MFC42.DLL on the
computer, and I changed their names as you suggested, leaving only one
version (the correct one as you note) in my Windows\System folder. After
rebooting though I still get the same problem. I double checked that there
were no other MFC42.DLL files that mysteriously reappeared, but that doesn't
seem to be the problem. Again, not a serious problem, but very curious.

Storm,

What is the version of mfc42.dll? However since you have tried renaming
all copies other than the copy in the windows\system folder and that copy
is protected against being replaced by an incorrect copy by Win Me's
System File Protection mechanism I doubt it is going to be the incorrect
version.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure I have anything else to suggest.

I wonder if it's a variation on Version Soup?

Storm - download and run Belarc Advisor from www.belarc.com - see what it
has to say about the state of your Hotfixes (windows Update patches).
Have you ever reinstalled ME over itself?? (don't - it's not really a good
idea, without proper preparation!)
