Default Explorer problem help needed

I'm running Win98SE, 200 MHz CPU and 64 M RAM. This problem just
started. I might add that I run with Windows Explorer on all the time.

For the last 2 nights, when I went to shut down my computer, Windows
Explorer hung everything up. The first night I got a message that said:

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL.

I used SFC to replace KERNEL32.DLL

Last night it hung again and the message said:

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module unknown.

In both cases CTRL-ALT-DEL did no good. The message box would not go
away and the only way I could shut down was to turn the puter off.

When I turned it back on, all worked OK, but I don't know about tonight.

Knowing that Explorer and IE6 are tied together, I tried using the "fix
IE6" in Add Remove Programs. I have Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106IS
and Internet Explorer Q828750 installed. When I tried fixing IE6 I got
a message that said:

ver 6.0.2600.0 of file licmgr10.dll exists but her ver needs to be
greater than 6.0.2800.1100
ver 6.0.2600.0 of file pngfilt.dll exists but her ver needs to be
greater than 6.0.2800.1100
ver 6.0.2600.0 of file jsproxy.dll exists but her ver needs to be
greater than 6.0.2800.1100

Does anyone know what is happening with my explorer? I have not added
any new programs for quite some time.
Is there a way to fix IE6 if that's the problem?

Thanks and sorry this is so long.

Try this:

Instead of using "IE Repair", use "Add Component". Put check marks into every
box that will accept it (some may not.) Include Multi-Language options if you
wish, but definitely include all others. Commence reinstallation.

I have added the SP1 and Q828750 to my installation of IE6. Should I
still use the "Add Component" from my original IE6 disk as you
suggested? Will I really screw things up if I am mixing versions of
IE6?

Here's what I did do. I ran Norton WinDoctor from the CD, not installed
on my HD. It found, can't remember exactly, 34 errors, 17 in the
registery. I let it fix everything. I ran it again and it said I had no
problems. I ran Windows Explorer and it ran faster and without the
sometimes halter I got before. I did the happy dance.

I let Windows Explorer run for about 3 hours and then downloaded my
email and visited my newsgroups and then decided to see if Explorer was
still behaving. When I tried to close it, it hung again with the same
message about error in unknown. I pushed the re-set button and then
let the puter do it's thing. Explorer then worked like a charm.

I ran WinDoctor immediately from the CD again and it said I had no
problems.

I have run a complete NAV scan, AdAware and Spybot with the up to date
definitions for each and found nothing.

It seems that if I let Explorer sit for a while, something gets goofed
up.

Unfortunately, I waited too long to do a scanreg /restore. The restore
files are dated after the problem started. I should have tried that
immediately.

So, you're saying that due to the way WinDoctor was run, you have no UNDO
capabilities? Because if you *can* undo those "fixes" I'd try that.

Force-reinstalling will run setup again from your Windows Updates Setup files
store, or if that's not present, it will download the setup files. Whichever
way, the SP1 files are part of that store already. No concern needed in re SP1.
If you're concerned about any other patches, reinstall them from Windows
Updates. Personally, I'd reinstall all patches issued since IE6 SP1.
