WinME & Norton 2004
I purchased, d/l'd and installed "Norton AntiVirus 2004" ... no problem
with the installation, but afterwards I could not open anything, connect to the internet or anything ... fortunately, I have "Go-Back" on my machine and I was able to revert to a pre-"Norton AntiVirus 2004" state .... I had this problem once before when I d/l'd and installed another program off of the net ... my ISP Tech Support Guy said that something was corrupting my "explorer.exe" file ... I just used "Go-Back" to revert back to an earlier state here, too ... Does anyone have any idea what's going on or how I can fix this problem? .... many thanks in advance ... ~ Mick ~ |

You are trying to install a program that is not compatable with WinME,
namely Norton 2004. I would suggest you take it back and request a refund and then get an AV program that will not cause your computer grief. If you read through these NG's you will see many posts concerning the problems that Norton products cause. Can I ask a really dumb question? (or four)
Do Norton/Symantec know about their software limitations? Do they care? Has any Norton/Symantec representative ever made any comment in public? Is there somewhere on the Web that will answer these questions? Do they care?
Who knows? As long as the ill-informed masses continue to flock like lemmings and purchase Symantec products and fill their coffers why should they care? Live for today and damn tomorrow fits Symantec's attitude to a T. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP [2001-2004] George Gee wrote: Can I ask a really dumb question? Mike, Noel,
Thanks for your responses. Just as I thought. The problem seems to get worse with every new release! Excuse me now ..... must get in touch with Esther ..... Joan For a company that has been around as long as Norton/Symantec, it is inconceivable that they could continue to produce programs that cause problems with the Windows Platform, ever since it was first introduced with Win95. I have used it off and on, but only sections of the Norton suites. Using the entire suite, of any year, is dangerous. What's so surprising Microsoft ahs been doing it for years. As far as Norton goes I've never had any problems with it and I have yet to get a virus that it hasn't caught. But that is the only one of their products I use. I'll say one other thing, they really donm't care very much about their customers, their web sit is one of the most non-user friendly I'v ever seen. Walt Well, Walt.....I would suggest you listen to what is being said. I used Norton as a total newbie and got FOUR viruses in 3 weeks because I had a defective one. That was just for starters!! I had no clue about viruses and as it was Xmas and the stores were closed and Norton's infamous Tech Support didn't support, I somehow figured it out myself and got it working and deleted Happy99 and CIH, just to mention two. And that is how I got involved in the antivirus world. Norton is cr*p!! Their tech support is non-existant!! And if you send off a new virus to them, they write back and tell you that it is NOT a virus.....which has caused grief to many a newbie user....because a day or two later, they write and say "Oops...that was a new virus" Shall I go on? Nah.....but I do hope you get the picture. Auntie Virus |
