Upgrade to XP Home
My system went from 95 to 98 and now I want to go to XP.
The question is if I buy the XP Home upgrade rather than the full release, does it ask for my 98 licence key? I have my 95 details but cannot find my 98 details. thanks, Peter |

Upgrade to XP Home
Hi Peter,
If this system was designed for Win98 I suggest you take a look at the system requirements before attempting the upgrade. And keep in mind, these are the very bare minimum requirements. Windows XP Home Edition System Requirements: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...n/sysreqs.mspx And no, it will not ask for a product key, it will ask you to insert the Win98 CD. The Win95 CD will also work. -- Regards, Bert Kinney [MS-MVP DTS] http://dts-l.org/ How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164 To find your existing product key in Win98 Provided you still have Windows running (Normal or Safe Mode) run regedit.exe and look at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ Win98/WinME look for ProductKey in the right pane. -- Regards, Bert Kinney [MS-MVP DTS] http://dts-l.org/ How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164 "Peter Jones" wrote My system went from 95 to 98 and now I want to go to XP. No the WIN95 disk will not work and if you can't find your
WIN98 disk the WINXP upgrade wont work you're better off buying the Full version which will upgrade without asking for any qualifying previous OS disk. -----Original Message----- Hi Bert, Thanks for the info. Hi Peter,
Yes, that is my understanding. It's confirmed here. You could always ask this question on one of the XP newsgroups for another opinion before you spend any money. That is not correct. Windows XP (Home or Pro) will not upgrade an *installed* copy of Windows 95. That is by design. However if you are doing a clean install (newly formatted drive) using the Retail Upgrade version of Windows XP (Home or Pro) then it will ask you to insert a CD from a qualifying product and a Windows 95 installation CD will work for this purpose. This was apparently unintentional, but it was discovered too late in the beta testing process so it was decided to leave it as is. Ron Martell Duncan B.C.
