Default Hardware Installation

I am trying to install a router but the system tells me
that a previous installation has not been completed and
tells me to reboot the system to complete it. I did so a
few times but the mesaage stll comes up. I did install an
ethernet card for my new high speed inrtenet connection.
But as far as I know it the installation was completed
successfully as the internet connection is now working.
Question: How will I find the "unsuccessful" installation,
if any. How can I go ahead with the nes installation.
I have a Window ME. The router is Wireless Base Station
(MN-700)
Thank you.

This looks like you're running Norton?

try this

Start|Run
type

SCANREG /FIX

click OK - Windows will reboot

See if that fixes it

OK
let's look a little deeper, then....
Open Windows Explorer got to Tools|Folder Options|View
Make sure that your settings are correct to be able to View System Files and
Folders, View Hidden Files, and View ALL extensions. - click OK out to
Explorer again
Then do a Search for files named WININIT.INI
if you find any, rename them to WININIT.JNK - then open it in notepad, and
paste the contents into your response.

There is only one wininit.ini file, with only two lines,
as follows:

[RENAME]
NUL=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\~805663.TMP

I have not renamed renamed it yet.

Thanks.

Default Hardware Installation

rename it
reboot
repeat the search
If it appears again, you almost certainly have malware of some sort on your
PC

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Try BHODemon - from http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/bhod/

Download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

(thanks to Graham Womack for the following)
Do all this in Safe Mode.......
Make a Restore Point - just in case it gets worse.
Using Regedit, search for 'Safeguard'. Make a note of the dll name (if
there's an entry at all).
Run BHODemon. Look for the same dll name The 'Details' key should give you
more information about when the entries were loaded. Disable the registry
entry.
Search your hard drive for the dll file (should be in Windows\System).
Rename it and a similar named lib file - change the extensions.
Reboot, cross your fingers and try 'My Computer'

HTH
