My avast! home user antivirus program flagged VBS:Trojano-472 yesterday and
isolated it to its "Virus Chest." Immediate rerun showed my computer to be
virus-free. But I don't know what to do with the Virus Chest now and avast!
isn't much help. Under some conditions I could forward the Virus Chest
offending file to Alwil, the owner of avast!, but this is rejected as being
'way too large for transmission. What do/can/should I do with it? The
computer seems to run all right with the worm isolated so I don't believe
its deletion has affected any essential functions. Can I merely empty the
Virus Chest and be done with it? I am suspicious that Trojano-472 is a
keylogger, but not sure.

Thanks,

Ken Bland

Just delete it and forget about it.

Re-run the Avast detection with your computer in SAFE MODE. Then allow Avast
to isolate it to the vault. Then immediately reboot your machine normally.

Thank you. After posting my question I looked for some help among avast!'s
FAQs. One other person had a similar query but for another virus or worm.
The 'official' answer was to leave it in the virus chest for a week or two
and then delete it. Upon reflection, this seemed to me a rather silly
suggestion because the nature of my infection was that it could not be
restored or corrected. And it could not be e-mailed because the two created
files were humongous! One was 156 MB (not KB) and the other was 61.2 MB.
They're both gone now.

Done. I thought that a full-file scan in Safe Mode might be faster than in
normal mode but it still took a lo-o-o-ng time. No more viruses or worm,
though. I have deleted the contents of the Virus Chest.

You might want to do a boot scan. On the top left there is an arrow
pointing upwards. Click on it and choose Schedule Boot-Time Scan.

Ken:
As of the moment I don't have the kind of alert from Avast you are
experiencing, but had to deal with it in the past.
By now you may have your problem resolved with the help of Alias and Ogg
and, just to put your mind at ease, I would like to assure you of my total
personal satisfaction with Avast as my AV program, not counting the
interference with SR. and the mail, both of which can easily be
circumvented.

Harry.

Thank you, Harry. Please don't misunderstand: I think avast! is doing
exactly what it's supposed to do, it's only that this is the first time it
hit an error and I was unclear about how to treat it. I am assured that I
can merely delete the contents of the Virus Chest (and have done so) which
is indeed an option when the error is encountered. The "recommended" option
is to keep it isolated in the Virus Chest.

Yours for ever better virus flagging and deleting.

Ken:
Your sentiments on this subject are shared by me completely and I fully
understand your situation.
I am glad you like this program and also certain that you will be pleased
with it, especially the update feature.
After all, it still is 'totally free'.
The best of luck, or should I say 'protection'?

Harry.
