How to do a Dual Boot where win98 and windows xp are kept separate?
Hi,
1.I have one 80GB hard drive with win98 se fat32 installed and partitioned into 8 drives. 2. I have another 20 GB hard drive with windows xp pro fat32 installed and one partition. I want to install the two drives on my ecs k7s5a pro motherboard: http://www.ecsusa.com/products/k7s5a_pro.html I tried to installing the first hard drive on the 1st ide channel (no slave) and the second hard drive as a slave on the 2nd ide with a cdrom as a master (It probably should be the other way around , but I was too lazy to switch them). I press on F8 as I'm booting and a boot menu comes up asking me to choose which one I want to boot with. The problem is regardless of which one I boot with the drive (s) of the other harddrive show up. I want to use the first drive for use on the internet as well as other stuff. The second drive I don't want to use on the internet. I strictly want to use it as a daw (digital audio workstation), with only windows xp and sonar 4 installed on it. How do I create a dual boot so that I don't see the drive(s) of the other hard drive on the one I boot with - i.e., where both hard drives are kept completely separate? Right now what I do is remove the power cable to the hard drive I don't want to use and boot with the other hard drive. Thanks, |

Your best bet here is to purchase a switch that will allow you to
boot either to one drive or another. I have seen these in catalogs, and will post a URL if I can locate this device. Wait a second.... Are you using the ecs k7s5a pro mb at this time, or is this a new? The problem I see is that some Windows installations load drivers for a particular type of hardware, so if the W98 or XP installations that you have now are not using this MB, the Win OS might not load at all becasue you switched MBs on it. Try connecting one drive to this MB and boot. Did it load Windows correctly? If not, then you'll have to reinstall that Windows version. Now try it with the other drive. Did it boot? If not, then you'll have to reinstall that Windows version. A real bummer, but a lot of hardware changes when the MB is replaced! Obviously, if you were using this MB with at least one of your WIndows installations, at least that should load properly. Good luck! Saga "John" wrote in message .. . If still interested in the switch, called a hard rive selector, here is the URL: http://www.industechnologies.com/idx400.html Saga "John" wrote in message .. . Thanks, When you convert the XP drive to NTFS, the drive cannot be accessed while in '98. But it still can be formatted or wiped when you will get _real_ bad malware. When using this option you could use a bootmanager like Xosl. http://www.ranish.com/part/xosl.htm |

I would use a program like Partition Magic and change your XP PRO drive to
NTFS so that the 98SE drive cannot see it. The way I have my system is a 40 gig. hard drive with 98SE in Fat32 and an 80 gig. hard drive with XP Pro. in NTFS. The 98SE drive cannot see the XP Pro. drive but remember the XP Pro. drive can still see the 98SE drive. I would feel free to read your 98SE files in XP Pro. but I would advise against making any changes to them in case you end up corrupting the files so that they can no longer be read by 98SE. I hope this information helps and may you end up having as stable a dual-boot system as I have currently. When you convert the XP drive to NTFS, the drive cannot be accessed while

Changing the partition from FAT32 to NTFS will not change your boot
procedure - it will simply make the NTFS partition invisible when you boot to W98. You will still need a mechanism to determine which OS to boot to. Some boot managers allow you to nominate which partitions are visible or hidden for each boot option, making FAT32/NTFS a non-issue. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "John" wrote in message .. . Sorry for the misunderstanding; I installed both os's on the
same and only motherboard I own: the ecs k7s5a pro motherboard - I wasn't planning on getting another motherboard. They both work fine on this motherboard. What about this switch? How does it work? The previous poster mentioned re-installing the xp drive in ntfs? This might solve my problem, no? "Saga" wrote in message ... So re-partitioning xp to ntfs and using boot menu (f8) won't work?
So I need a boot manager and in that case I don't need to re-partition xp in ntfs format? However, will I have true separation between the two hard drives or should I get a switch like this: http://www.industechnologies.com/idx400.html? "Jeff Richards" wrote in message ...
