Default Generic installer Error

My hard drive was messed up so a friend gave me his old
hard drive to replace mine. I FDISKed it, partitioned
and formatted it, but when I tried to do a clean re-
install with my windows 98SE I got this messag which I
have never seen before; " Generic installer Error Message
SU99407 AddReg=processing error (0x197)." I tried a
third party program to wipe my drive again, partioned
it,formatted it and tried another clean install with a
full version of windows 98SE and got the same error
messag. Does anyone out there know how to overcome this.
I have search for different Microsoft errors and could
not see any information on this problem. Thanks for any
help.

The system was not able to create some registry entries associated with the
installation procedure. This might be because the INF file (which contains
the entries to add) is corrupted. Try copying the installation CD to a
folder on the hard drive and installing from that folder. It might be
because the registry is getting corrupted, and the most common reason for
this is bad RAM. Get a RAM diagnostic routine and confirm that RAM is
working OK.

Do you know why the original hard disk drive got so badly messed up?
