freeing "backup" disk space
We had a gateway computer that came installed with win98. Recently, we found
a CD labeled "Second Edition" and installed that. During the installation, it asked if we wanted to keep a "backup" which would take "up to 110 MB" and we chose yes. How do we now delete that backup so that we can use the disk space again, please? |

When Win98 installs its operating system over another, you have the option to save the earlier OS. If your OS has run flawlessly for a month or more without your ever thinking about its predecessor, you might as well delete the saved WinSetup.DAT or whatever it is called (size usually 150 to 200 Mb.) 1. Like some system files, this DAT file may by default be attributed Hidden: so ensure your system Shows All Files and Shows Filetypes as well as the first parts of file names. 2. When in EXPLORER = My Computer, you can sort by any column by clicking on the head of that column: and click a second time to reverse the order. WINSETUP.DAT is created by default in either C:\ (root directory) or C:\Windows (although you had the option to locate it somewhere else.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

If your OS has run flawlessly for a month or more without your ever thinking about its predecessor, After the network login, there is now (after the "Second Edition" CD install) a pause of 60 seconds or so before the desktop becomes populated with any icons. It's annoying. Is that a normal feature after such a "Second Edition" upgrade, or is there some way to eliminate that lengthy pause, please? you might as well delete the saved WinSetup.DAT or whatever it is called (size usually 150 to 200 Mb.) 1. If you do not really need the Network Login you might as well remove it (via / Control Panel / Users or / Network, I forget which.) 2. The 60-sec. delay is not standard. Are you loading into Systray more than you really use? -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

If you do not really need the Network Login you might as well remove it (via / Control Panel / Users or / Network, I forget which.) Yes, we do need it, as we wish to restrict network access to only those weak-willed individuals who know the password. I say "weak-willed" because I understand the facade of "security" and how to circumvent it if one really wants to. 2. The 60-sec. delay is not standard. Are you loading into Systray more than you really use? Nothing beyond what was loaded *before* the "Second Edition" upgrade when the delay didn't exist. Are there any diagnostics available that can tell us what is happening during this delay? |

At reboot on this Win98SE PC (2.8 GHz) there is a variable pause (5 to 20 sec.) between BIOS boot completion and appearance of the (custom) Windows backdrop -- which is fully populated with about 25 icons in 6 or 7 seconds, after which it takes another 8 or 10 sec. to load the Systray (3 items: Sound Volume, Resource Meter and Mailwasher email filter.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |
