Default USB driver problem w/Sony camera?

We have a Sony DSC-P71 camera that was working previously w/ Windows 98 via
a USB cable to download images.

Recently the computer would freeze when connecting, and we had to
power-cycle the machine to regain control. Sometimes the downloads would
work, other times it would require a power switch reboot. Now it doesn't
even recognize the camera as a storage device, when it previously showed
"E:".

With the camera connected and powered up, the Device Manager shows:

- Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
- Unknown Device
- USB Root Hub

We've deleted the "Unknown Device", rebooted, downloaded and installed the
ftp://download.sony.com/US/dvimag/USBDRVEN.EXE USB driver, rebooted and the
new hardware is found, but the only driver available for it is the "Unknown
Device" again, and we're right back where we started.

Can someone help please?

We found a "Second Edition" win98 CD, and after installing that, the Sony
USB driver is now recognized.
