Silj:

Would "Alexa" be a false positive?
I did remove 8 of them without having any problems.
The reason I have done so being, that this was not my first encounter of
same.
But always open for suggestions.

Harry.

Quite possibly, Mart - seeing more updates more often, though.
I forgot to note in my post, beware of false-positives as we have
seen over the last two updates.
Anything odd detected on an ostensibly "clean" machine should
be quarantined but *not* removed until it is clarified elsewhere.
A note of these, if any, would be appreciated below.

Alexa is exactly what it says it is - but by the nature of what it is, it
has to send some information which some people may consider confidential
back to its server, which then processes it, and sends the results back to
you. it then also aggregates the results of those searches for its own and
others' use.
If you use Alexa and are OK with their privacy statement, then don't delete
the stuff - put it in the ignore list. If you don't/won't use Alexa, delete
it (one entry comes by default with IE), If you don't know what Alexa is,
you probably don't need it, and should delete it.

Thanks Noel for the clarification, even though "Alexa" didnn't mean a thing
to me until I researched it.
It is Google related. I do have an email account with them, but don't use
their 'Google Bar'. And I also don't need any and all of that information
exchange, unless I should move up to *Webmaster* or the like, which is very
*unlikely*.
Now I feel justified in removing its presence.
Still think you ought to team up with Ad-Aware and make some *real money*,
unless you already do bg.

Harry.

Your welcome, Harry - note that if you were previously registered
you *may* have to register again.
I was not a happy camper to find that I am now back to being a newbie
at Lavasoft, though I was one of the first few to run the app.
Mike and Noel may remember that :-)

Sorry to hear that, Silj. These people may be good at what they are doing,
but they don't have much heart.
But then, that's not what the program is all about, is it?
Sometimes you will have to give a little too, besides taking.
That was supposed to make you feel better - did it?

Harry.

Hello Harry,

Actually it's a registry key set by Internet Explorer (at least in 9x). Thus
it returns if you repair or otherwise re-install IE. Alexa is used by IE to
operate the 'Tools\Related Sites' (iirc) link. As I recall, if you hit
'Related Sites', your browsing for that session is thereafter tracked by
Alexa, presumably via Tracking Cookie. iow it isn't in use until you hit the
'Related Sites' button.

Shane, that bored

Read these SpyBot FAQs on Alexa, Harry - then you decide.
IMO, it's fairly self-evident.

I didn't know that about Google, Silj. Seems a reasonable approach.

I also don't know why Paul Whitehouse would wear wraparound shades! Suits
him, sir, I suppose!
