Problem Making Startup Disk
Files needed by the "Create Startup Disk" program are not in the expected
location and not the expected file extension. The disk creation program is looking for aspi2dos.sys, autoexec.ebd, command.ebd, config.ebd, extract.ebd, fixit.ebd, himem.ebd, ramdrive.ebd, readme.ebd, setramd.ebd, and winboot.ebd files in C:\windows\options\install. I found all of these files in C:\windows\command\EBD except the extensions are the "more normal" .bat, ..sys, .txt, etc. What should I do now? Any ideas on the cause of this mix-up? (This computer may have been upgraded to ME from 95.) Thanks for whatever help\advice you can provide. -- Paul M. |

Problem Making Startup Disk
The "expected location" is the folder containing the file BASE2.CAB and
not the Windows\Command folder. This is normally either C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or C:\Windows\Options\Install although some OEMs chose to place the folder containing the Win Me cab files elsewhere, sometimes even on a hidden partition, and then, having done so, failed to edit the registry correctly to point to that location. Use Windows Explorer's Search to locate the folder containing BASE2.CAB. When asked for files by "Create Startup Disk" point it as the folder containing BASE2.CAB. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows [2001-2006] Paul M. wrote: Files needed by the "Create Startup Disk" program are not in the expected location and not the expected file extension. Problem Making Startup Disk
Mike,
That was it exactly. I found BASE2.CAB in C:\WINME and I was able to make a startup disk. I don't know how I would have gotten this information without the help of this forum. What registry key and value can I edit to have this redirection occur automatically. This would be a big help for the next time someone wants to make a startup disk on this computer. Thanks. -- Paul M. "Mike M" wrote: The "expected location" is the folder containing the file BASE2.CAB and not the Windows\Command folder. What registry key and value can I edit to have this redirection occur automatically. This would be a big help for the next time someone wants to make a startup disk on this computer. Paul, I'm pleased to read that you've now solved the problem of making a startup disk. Correcting the registry entry will not only make making a startup disk much easier next time someone might want to make one on that PC but also allow them to use MSConfig to extract files from the Win Me cab set [MSConfig | General | Extract file]. Correcting the problem: Use regedit (Start, Run, enter Regedit in box and click OK) Brows in the left hand pane to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup Now in the right hand pane look for the string value "SourcePath". double click this value and enter the name of the folder containing BASE2.CAB including the full path, for example, C:\WINME\ Click OK and close regedit. Check that all is now OK by making another Win Me startup disk. Regards, -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows [2001-2006] |

Mike,
This worked perfectly. Thanks for the very clear instructions. -- Paul M. "Mike M" wrote: Paul M. wrote: That was it exactly. I found BASE2.CAB in C:\WINME and I was able to make a startup disk. Problem Making Startup Disk
Again thanks Paul for the feedback. Having a poster reply to a suggestion
helps everyone, especially others who might experience the same problem. Reporting that a suggested fix worked makes posting worthwhile. Cheers, -- Mike Maltby Paul M. wrote: This worked perfectly. Thanks for the very clear instructions. |
