Default SCANREG Stalls, System Info Missing

I'm submitting there two problems together in case they are related. This is
the same computer I had the missing file structure in Windows Explorer that I
repaired with your help by re-registering a dll file:

SCANREG runs fine, but SCANREG /FIX stalls with the indicator bar 1/4 of the
way accross.

When I select "Programs Accessories System Tools System Information" I
get the message "Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation
Software. Management files may be moved or missing". All of the tabs seem to
indicate the correct the correct system information; it's just the top level
that isn't displaying. Could this be another registry problem?

The fact that Scanreg /Fix fails is probably due to the size of the registry
files involved - Win9x doesn't like an overlarge registry.

This is one of the few time that I think that use of a registry cleaner can
be justified - but only under supervision.

System Info not showing anything could be due to registry corruption - or it
could be due to errors elsewhere in the file system.

I would suggest fixing the System Information problem first - after ensuring
that System Restore functions properly (as that also performs a registry
backup).

Download and run Belarc Advisor to first check up on the status of your
installed hotpatches - see what it reports, and post back.

Have you at any time reinstalled ME over itself??
What version of IE are you running?

Try reinstalling the MDAC and Scripting updates - from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

See whether that improves thing - and post back with the results.

Noel,

Thanks for your response. I will get to checking on the status of the
updates.

SCANREG /FIX did run after all. I had initially checked it after what
seemed like 20 minutes and observed no progress, but I left the computer for
several hours and when I returned SCANREG had completed and restarted the
computer. My system information is now correct.

I believe you are correct that the registry is probably huge. Is there a
resource you can guide me to for cleaning up the registry?

As far as I know ME has not been installed over itself.

I am running IE 5.5 SP1.

I not grasping what you mean by reinstalling "the MDAC and scripting
updates". Sorry.

Thanks again for your help.

Glad to hear that the /Fix worked, eventually!
the MDAC and Scripting updates are commonly associated with System Info
failures (if they get broken, then System Info can't work properly). Since
your System Info is now working, I'd leave them alone for now, unless you
find other problems later.

You really need to upgrade to IE6SP1 - it's much more secure than IE5.5, and
a little faster, too.
I suspect that as you haven't upgraded IE, you may still be running a
largely unpatched copy of ME - if this is the case then you MUST go to
Windows updates, and install at least the Critical Updates, as they will
help to protect your system from all sorts of untoward nasty events,
particularly if you do any internet surfing.

Default SCANREG Stalls, System Info Missing

Noel,

I did have a look at the links you provided for MDAC and Scripting updates,
and now I have a bit of understanding as to what they are. However, the
Scripting link goes to a page that is identified as appropriate for XP and
2000. Is this also applicable to ME?

I have upgraded to IE6SP1. The files were apparently already in the computer
since the download went very fast (I'm on dial-up). Maybe running SCANREG
/FIX fixed something that allowed IE6 to install now.

All updates are now installed except two that identify as installing but
apparently don't because then show up in the next run of Update ("Critical
update for WIndows Media Player Script Commands KB828926" and "Cumulative
Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 KB937009"). I saw the
Media Player update issue addresses in another post, and I will try the
recommended resolution.

I still have some problem with System Info. When I run SCANREG /FIX system
info shows up immediately. However, when I restart then display System Info I
will get the error message I first reported. If I shut down the System
Information window and restart it, the system information will display
properly on the third try. Could this issue be connected with a registry that
is too big?

Is there a good tool available to clean up the registry in ME? I remember
using a Norton tool a couple of years ago to tune up the registry and Windows
on another computer, but I have a feeling that you would prefer a tool
created by someone else.

Oooops! - sorry!
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
is the correct link for ME/Win9x/

Not too sure about the cause of your intermittent problem with System Info -
this is a symptom I've not heard of before, but it could be related to the
install problems with the update for IE.
download and run Belarc Advisor, and check that all updates are correctly
installed - post back with the list of any faulty ones.

WRT Registry cleaners, there really is no such thing as a 'safe' cleaner -
all will break the system if used too enthusiastically - and they should
be used only to get the information as to what *may* require attention,
before checking with other sources as to whether such attention is either
warranted or advised. I prefer therefore not to make recommendations (but
would definitely advise you to stay away from Norton!).
