Default About uninstalling programs

Is there any general preference about uninstalling programs? If the program
itself offers an uninstaller is it better or the same as using the
Add/Remove function from the Control Panel?

This is usually the same thing, that is the entry in Add/Remove Programs
in most cases links to the installer/uninstaller that is part of the
program.

Ken:
I've read it being said that the Add/Remove utility does a more thorough job
than the built-in feature of the program itself. That was quite some time
ago and I have ever since followed this practice without penalty.
To hear now it's inconsequential, makes me wonder.

Harry.

My thanks to you both, Harry and Mike. I suspected that the program's
uninstall simply called the Add/Remove feature so it looks pretty much like
a toss-up.

If this particularly concerns you you can always check what the Add/Remove
entry is calling by looking in the registry. In virtually all cases it is
identical to the entry installed in the program group by the program
itself since it is the program that also placed it in Add.Remove Programs
when it was installed. It is for this reason, that they are the same,
that many programs no longer bother to place an uninstall entry in the
program group and instead just place one in Add/Remove Programs when
installing.
