Backup from safe mode?
"Deb" wrote in message
... I know I know - always back up your data because your computor will fail at some time BUT, now I've got myself into a corner is there a way out? I'm running Windows 98 SE and can only start it in safe mode at the moment. I think the simplest solution is to re-install windows and the other programmes I wish to use on the pc. But I have not kept up to date with my back ups. I can create a backup file but, becuse of its size (113 MB - lots of pictures) can't use the floppy drive to archive it. I had hoped to use the USB connection to hook up a backup device - but I see from other posts this isn't possible. Safe Mode loads no drivers so your CD drives and USB ports are unavailable. Considering prices etc., it is nowadays a practical solution to get a second hard drive and copy to that everything you want to back up. This can all be done in Safe Mode. Web site www.xxcopy.com has reliable advice on the quick-and-dirty method of swapping between two hard drives. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Backup from safe mode?
A second drive is a good idea regardless; however, maybe you ought to try
solving the problem as well. The first two articles do not apply unless the PC itself starts in safe mode.
