running Windows ME. When someone sends a document in
wordpad (.doc file) I cannot open it & get the following
message: "Wordpad has caused an error in MSWRD832.cnv.
Wordpad will now close."

How can I fix this?

Thanks for any help.

Mike,

Files with a DOC extension are far more likely to be created using Word than
WordPad.

It appears that you are trying to open a document written using a later
version of MS Word than can be opened with WordPad. For details see MS KB
276337 - "WD2000: Problems Opening Word Document in WordPad"

Rather that trying to use WordPad for such documents you might want to
consider downloading and installing the free Microsoft Word viewer
(http://office.microsoft.com/download...wd97vwr32.aspx).

Mike,

You're right. I downloaded the program & it works. I was
confused by the WORD & WORDPAD program names. It just
didn't click. Another question: I've got windows ME &
can't figure out how to backup my files. I have a CD
writing program that I would like to copy files to a CD
with, but can't find the backup program on windows ME like
it was on windows 98. I'm kinda weak when it comes to
computers. Did you figure that out?

Thanks again
Mike

Mike,

The MS Backup program is in the add-ons\msbackup folder on Microsoft Me CDs
but unfortunately it appears that not all OEMs have included this folder on
the CDs they provide with new PCs. Similarly many of those OEMs who simply
provide restore CDs appear also to have omitted this program.

The executable needed to install MSBackup that Microsoft distribute on the Win
Me CD is msbexp.exe so if you have an OEM CD or a recovery CD you might want
to search the CD and see if it was included.

See also MS KB 264541 - "Microsoft Backup Tool Is Not Installed by Windows
Millennium Edition" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=264541). Note that
Microsoft have not made MSBackup available for download.

Note though that MSBackup is an antiquated application that is extremely
limited and was designed for use with tape drives when hard disks were small,
for example 3 or 4GB.

A number of alternative backup applications exist and which best suits you
depends on your requirements and range from imaging programs that will back up
an image of your hard disk or disk partition (applications such as Symantec
Ghost, PowerQuest's DriveImage and Terabyte Unlimited's BootItNG) to
applications that allow the back up of selected files and folders on an
incremental basis such as Stomp's BackUp MyPC
(http://www.stompinc.com/bump/bump-retail.phtml?stp) which can also access QIC
files created using MSBackup.

Mike,

Again you are right on. Downloaded the backup program &=20
it works fine. I like to keep a copy off site for safety=20
reasons, & now I can. Thanks again.

Miguel,

Glad to read you've now been able to back up your system satisfactorily. I
wish others would do so. BTW which backup program did you decide to use?

Microsoft backup distributed by Seagate was the one on my

hard drive so I just installed it. Works great & is easy
to understand.

Again-----Gracias.--
