Default Att: Gary S. Terhune - MS Office 2000 SR-1

Sorry, Gary, for bothering you, again!
My inquiry, regarding the problem with the installation of MS Office 2000
SR-1, installed in my Computer, was posted back in October 2006, in case you
should you look for further details. The suggested solution appeared rather
complex to me and I sort of abandoned the idea of doing something about my
problem. I re-read some of your comments and noted something that should be
rehashed, I think. I
must have mislead you in thinking that the Version that is installed in my
Computer is MS Office Pro, rather than Office
2000 SR-1. The only CDs that I have are for Office Pro. The computer in
trouble was purchase in 1999 from a Computer outfit, that has since relocated
or ceased to exist. The CD for Office SR-1 were not provided.
This was your reply:
(At that time, I had 2 computers on hand. Note that, the one you call
Computer 1 ("good" Office install), no longer usable for other problems, had
the Office Pro. Computer 2, the troubled one, now in use, has Office SR-1.)

Gary S. Terhune 11/10/2006 10:09 AM PST

1. You can't use the Office 2000 CD from Computer 1 ("good" Office
install) on Computer 2 ("troubled" install.) It is a downgrade and won't be
accepted. All you can do would be to uninstall Office Pro from the troubled
machine and then install a brand new setup from the non-Pro version
you have (which would be, incidentally, in contravention of the license and
may cause you problems with activation if it's been only recently installed
or reactivated on the "good" machine).

2. Without the CD for Office 2000 Professional for Computer 2, you won't be
able to do much of anything to fix the problem, install/uninstall/repair the
installation (or components thereof), or even Update, probably. Not even
worth downloading Updates or Service Packs. Service Pack
CDs are available for Office XP (2002) and Office 2003, but are no longer
available for Office 2000. If you were to obtain an installation CD for that
machine, allowing you to Add/Remove Components or Repair, then it would still
be difficult or impossible to get SPs over dial-up due to their size. In that
case I'd recommend finding someone with high-bandwidth and use their machine
to D/L and burn the SPs and other Updates to CD. However, lacking the
original installation CD, that isn't worth the trouble.

Gary, recently, I attempted at uninstalling Office SR-1, but it is not
possible. The system asks for Office Standard SR-1 disk and it specifically
looks for DATA1.MSI, for starters, I suppose. It won’t accept the one in the
CD for the Office Pro. Is there something that can be done to uninstall that
SR-1 Version?

Thanks!

Hmmm...

I'm just now getting back into the swing of things after I burned out during
my marathon computer rebuild session back on the 23rd (hit a wall, lost my
nerve... something that happens to me on occasion). Putting a new Asus P5B
plus other new components into my old box. But it's late, now, and I'll need
to review the old thread to figure out exactly what we're talking about. For
the moment, I don't think my advice will change much, though. I'm pretty
sure you need to have the original installation files for the Office
application (and I mean the *exact* ones used, since the product key is
involved, I think) in order to apply certain updates or to Repair the
installation.

If you don't have those original installation files, I'm fairly certain that
your only option is to uninstall it completely and use whatever installation
files you *do* have, if possible.

Quite impressed by your activities, Gary! My wish for 2007 would be that I
could acquire a miniscule amount of your knowledge in Computer matters!
To help(?) in hashing over old stuff, I could say that the only CDs that I
have are for MS Office Pro, meant for another computer not in operation. The
one installed in the Computer that I use is MS Office Standard SR-1 without
any original CD(s). If you recall from the old posts, as you suggested, I
managed to copy the contents of the Pro Version in another Folder, but, when
I activated the Setup from that Folder, things did not work out as expected.
So, I sort of gave up. Recently, I thought to uninstall the SR-1 Version and
install the Pro Version, but the system will not let me. It insists that I
supply a disk where, presumably, it can
find DATA1.msi and, without it, it refuses to uninstall it.
My question...is there another way to uninstall MS Office 2000 SR-1
Standard, besides going thru the standard method...Settings/Control
Panel/Add-Remove Programs?
Thanks for your time!
Happy 2007 to you and all!

Ideas (unfortunately, I have Office XP or later installed on my machines, so
the ideas may not make any sense at all):

1. Have you searched for that DATA1.MSI file on your system? I presume you
have, but can't recall if you mentioned that.

2. Search for a file named OFFCLN.EXE. Unfortunately, you probably don't
have it on your system, but it's worth a shot. It's a stand-alone Office
"clean up" utility. Might even try looking on the CD you have and seeing if
it's there. If so, try running it from that CD.

Default Gary S. Terhune - MS Office 2000 SR-1

Thank you for your patience, Gary!

The DATA1.MSI file is not in the MS Office Folder of my system. It is,
however, in the folder where I was able to copy the contents of MS Office
2000 Pro’s CD, but that version is found unacceptable.
You might recall that, since the only response I could get was periodic
grunts from the Office Pro, when its CD was inserted in the Drive, you
suggested to copy its contents to a folder. I could not do that on the
troubled machine, but I could on another machine (now gone) and,
subsequently, burn the contents on a CD and transfer all successfully to my
(troubled) Computer.
To re-iterate, the version of DATA1.MSI in that Folder is not acceptable.
However, in that same Folder, there is a file shown as OFFCLN9.EXE, not quite
the same as OFFCLN.EXE, you show. I tried to execute it from that location
and it appeared to want to go, at least up to the options it gave. Briefly,
these we 1. Remove files not needed---2. Let me
decide what to remove -- 3. Completely remove all older applications.
I did mot go any further, not knowing what it may have led it to.
I read the articles you mentioned and follow the directions for checking the
registry. I was surprised to see the number of references to the SR-1
Version. There are 6 entries showing the same contents on the right and left
panels, respectfully, Office Version and (User Information)
Folder name(?)- with a long alphanumeric ID, while searching for MS OFFICE
2000 in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entversion\Uninstall.
At any rate, my current question is if it would be OK to proceed with
OFFCLN9.EXE and if it might be OK to delete the repetitive entries from the
Registry, the hard way or by using RegSeeker Version 1.35.
Thank you and sincere wishes!

For

sure you need to have the original installation files for the Office

installation.

If you don't have those original installation files, I'm fairly certain
that
your only option is to uninstall it completely and use whatever
installation

Gary S. Terhune 11/10/2006 10:09 AM PST

1. You can't use the Office 2000 CD from Computer 1 ("good" Office
install) on Computer 2 ("troubled" install.) It is a downgrade and
won't be accepted. All you can do would be to uninstall Office Pro
from the troubled machine and then install a brand new setup from the
non-Pro version
you have (which would be, incidentally, in contravention of the
license and may cause you problems with activation if it's been only
recently installed or reactivated on the "good" machine).

2. Without the CD for Office 2000 Professional for Computer 2, you
won't be able to do much of anything to fix the problem,
install/uninstall/repair the installation (or components thereof), or
even Update, probably. Not even worth downloading Updates or Service
Packs. Service Pack
CDs are available for Office XP (2002) and Office 2003, but are no
longer available for Office 2000. If you were to obtain an
installation CD for that machine, allowing you to Add/Remove
Components or Repair, then it would still be difficult or impossible
to get SPs over dial-up due to their size. In that case I'd recommend
finding someone with high-bandwidth and use their machine to D/L and
burn the SPs and other Updates to CD. However, lacking the original
installation CD, that isn't worth the trouble.

MEB, I called that post to the attention of Gary because he was the one

If you have some other version of Office handy with the
CD key, there is a Microsoft utility to remove all versions
of Office 2K: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239938

I haven't had to do this recently, but in the past when
trying to deal with Microsoft's reluctance to let people
casually uninstall its stuff (you know full well that there
isn't a singel legitmate reason for requiring a CD for an
uninstall), I would use use JV16 to remove the program
from the registry and then just manually delete the its
folder(s) from the C:\Program Files folder and from the
C:\Windows\Application Data folder (if also there).

I would use that Microsoft removal tool last. The last
freeware version of JV16 can be found he

Since you brought it up, I recently downloaded and have installed this
program [from another site].
Much better program than the original RegCleaner which he produced.
Uniquely, he even declares that his old program was crappy coding, and
needed fixed [in the FAQ, included], how often do we see anyone doing that.
The increase in tools is nice, though one MUST still know what one is doing
for proper use. The file tool, temp files, and batch activities could be
useful to many, for various reasons.

I think though, that we should find out a little more from him before we
direct him to use other programs. Though I monitored the other previous
discussion, I don't remember all the details.

BTW: had to manually add the quotes to your message...
