Default IDE CONTROLLER ERROR

i just bought a compaq deskpro EN that had no os, so i
installed windows me, and it worked fine, then i tried to
install a new TEAC cd burner, and now neither of my cd
drives will work, and in hardware profiles there are
exclaimation points next to the primary and secondary IDE
controllers. i tried to update the drivers, but it says I
already have the best drivers. I removed the main HD
controller so it would re-install itself when i restart,
and it still doesnt work. ive been looking through all the
self-help windows pages and realized that im no techno
guy, because i dont understand what half the words mean.
can somebody help?

When you install hardware and things screw up; the first thing to do is
remove the hardware and verify that things will work as they did before. Did
you do that?

Ryan
Are the drives seen in the BIOS??

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager there, and...
Remove ALL CD devices
Remove ALL HD's
Remove ALL IDE Master Controllers
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch, if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers (may take a
couple of reboots)

See if that helps

The only thing that I must comment on is that your biggest
mistake was buying a compaq. I had one a few years back
and just as the warranty had run out, I had brought it to
someone to be fixed, cause the compaq tech kept telling me
that it was ok.. well it WAS NOT. and while the guy I had
brought it to was only running it to test it, it blew out
the rest of the power within the small mall it was at,
along with smoking itself too!.
