Default Problem with Floppy drive

I'm having a problem my A:\ or my floppy drive. I am trying to access
delindex via a floppy disk and when inserted into the drive on reboot, the
computer disregards whatever is in the floppy drive and continues to boot
into windows. Once in windows I would right click on floppy drive icon and
then click onto explore, and an error message stating "A:\ is not accessible.
The system cannot read from the specified device". I would then try to run
scandisk on the A:\ drive with more errors stating "Scandisk detected an
error while reading your drive. Scandisk detected an error while writing to
your drive". The computer would then freeze.
I've tried using different floppies and also tried to update the floppy
disk controller from device manager to no avail.
Can anyone offer some advice on troubleshooting this problem?
The floppy is my only means to get into DOS on windows Me. Thanks.

Have you made a Boot Floppy? If so, try it to see if it works......if it
doesn't, suspect a bad floppy drive. If you do not have a bootable floppy
(other than the one for delindex), you can download a boot floppy from
www.bootdisk.com .

Sounds like your BIOS has been set such that the floppy drive is not being
turned on and is not set to boot from the floppy as the #1 boot device.

No go, Heirloom.
I've tried as you suggested, to no avail.
Windows keeps right on loading even when floppy is inserted.
I have another drive lying around here, but not sure if I have to configure
anything for the new floppy drive. What do I need to know to reinstall the
new floppy drive?

I also checked the BIOS but the floppy is enabled.

Before uninstalling the floppy drive I checked the connections to and from
the drive.
There was a loose connection(ribbon) that I secured and that seems to fix
the problem. I can now get into Dos. Thanks to all.
