Default Windows protection Error.

I have a Dell pentium(r) III processor with 128 MBRAM
running Microsoft Windows ME 4.90.3000.

Anytime that I try to use a USB connection to download
pictures to my computer from a digital camera or music to
my RIO mp3 player - I get the blue screen of death
indicating:
"Windows protection error. You need to restart your
computer. System halted."

I've used my digital camera and mp3 player in the past
without having this problem. Does anyone know why I might
now be experiencing it? Thanks in advance for any advice.
